I think that is good for him and may be good for the Jayhawks but I am not expecting much. It is hard for freshman bigs to adjust to the game from what I have seen.

True, but when Self doesn’t really have options he can use in place of them like this year, he may decide they essentially have to learn as they go in order for the them and the team to be ready for FEB/MAR.

"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
Assuming he actually makes it (looks good at the moment, but it's not final yet), I see him as 5 fouls that we can give when Dok needs a break.
This isn't a knock on him, but it will take him several weeks (at best) to learn Self's system. Add to that the idea that he's got to adjust to being at KU, playing D1 basketball, college in general, and about 100 other things. Any real productivity we get out of him will be gravy.
That being said, I read where he says that he's going to focus on defense and rebounding, which is exactly what he SHOULD be doing while he's learning. Defense is pretty simple conceptually, and doesn't change much from program to program (other than the expected level of intensity). Ditto with rebounding: get your butt into your man, box out, and go after that ball. At 6'9", 240 he won't be easily pushed around.
So overall, this is great news.
Side note on Preston: in one of these updates, Self comments on how long it will take DeSousa to get caught up, but he also says it will take Preston a couple weeks to get up to snuff. What's that all about? If Preston is practicing with the team, should the expectation be that he should be pretty much 100% good to go as soon as the NCAA (hopefully) clears him? (Edited out: moved to the thread about Self's comments)
