This was a great win for the Hawks. This is the type of game, poor shooting, that can knock us out of the tourney early. We rely on so many jump shots, and we are a great shooting team (when we take good shots). Early season game against a young, but very long and athletic team. We fought and clawed and found a way to send little blue nation home. Proud of the effort and grit.
I also think we are a very flawed team in many ways. We are not as talented or as deep as we have been in the past, but that does not mean we cannot be a great team. We can beat anyone with our ability to shoot and we have a monster inside that most teams do not have. We just need better shot selection and play through Dok a little more.
I make game plans for my high school teams all of the time, I thought I would make one as if I were going to play the Hawks this season. Going into the game, I would hope my team was long and athletic like the Kentucky team, I think it is those types of teams that have a chance to beat us.
Devonte - best chance to frustrate him is to run him off of the 3 point line and make him drive the ball. He can beat you with the drive, but struggles passing and scoring once he is inside verses length. Take away the 3 point shot and he becomes a good college point guard instead of a Wooden Award finalist.
Svi - the perimeter player that fears me the most. He is the most skilled offensive player on the team. Can shoot and create off of the dribble. Must really make him guard on the defensive end and try to frustrate him on that end. This can cause him to put up some forced shots on the offensive end.
Dok - hack a Dok. We had better be deep with big men, because he is so massive that once he gets the ball in position he is either going to get a dunk or fouled. Getting him in foul trouble is our best bet. Also hope the KU guards forget about him on the offensive end.
Vick - super athletic wing that I want to turn into a jump shooter. A good jump shooter on the catch and shoot, but not a great shooter off of the dribble. Must also force to his left. He does not use his off hand.
Newman - very scary player. He is the most talented perimeter player on the team. He can shoot and drive and is a natural scorer. We would need to make him drive, run help at him and see if he will be capable of making the pass out to the open shooters. He will finish many drives, but his weakness is trying to finish at the rim when the correct play is the kick out to the open shooter.
Garrett - love the play of this kid. Is a very smart player. Play him straight up, knowing he won't make mistakes, but also will not turn into an alpha dog that can beat you by himself.
Preston - offer him a car or yell squirrel, seems to not be all in on the college experience at this point. As an opposing coach, I hope I am right, as he is very talented and can take this team to a higher level. He is a 5 star for a reason.
Lightfoot - attack him in the post. Great athlete and player, just not big enough to be an effective post option.
I truly believe the only way KU gets beat is if they play a long, athletic team and either have a poor shooting night or get into foul trouble with Dok. This team is going to win a lot of games, just hope the match ups are right come tourney time. We are not deep enough to beat a Duke or Mich. State right now, but come tourney time, I can see us beating anybody.

Cracked me up. Good stuff. Hadn't noticed Vick's lack of off-hand use. I'll look for it. Releford had the same issue when he was on the team.

Interesting...will watch for the opposition, to see how they execute your scouting report...hope we can overcome any explorations of our weaknesses!

Thanks for the report, minerscoach! Great stuff for us to look for in future games.

I’ve never seen a scouting report. NOW I UNDERSTAND when the talking heads will praise an assistant coach on the “scouting report.”

Excellent post...please keep them coming. Thought the execution was not good last night but the effort was terrific. Kudos to the guys for "willing" a win.
