When it comes to streaks, of course, first and foremost in our minds these days is the 13 straight conference titles.
Also KU streaking:
25+ win seasons: 12, since 2006
20+ win seasons: 28, since 1990
Most Consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances: 28 since 1990
One that we don't usually hear talked about, though, is this --
Most Consecutive Head Coaches earning a Final Four berth: 6
Phog, Harp, Owens, Brown, Williams, Self
Think about that.
There have been just 8 head coaches in KUMBB history.
The first two coached before there was an NCAA Tournament.
The last 6 coached since the inception of the NCAA Tournament in 1939.
EVERY ONE OF THOSE SIX since the inception of the NCAAT has taken KU to the Final Four at least once.
4x Williams - 1991, 1993, 2002, 2003
3x Allen - 1 NC 1940, 1952 (NC), 1953
2x Brown - 1 NC 1986, 1988 (NC)
2x Self - 1 NC 2008 (NC), 2012
2x Owens - 1971, 1974
1x Harp - 1957
Big deal, you say?
Let's compare the top NCAA title teams.
UCLA(11): 12 coaches since 1939. Longest such streak is 2 in a row, John Wooden and Gene Bartow
UK(8 ): 6 coaches since 1939. Longest such streak is 2 in a row -- Adolph Rupp and Joe B. Hall; Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith
UNC(5): 9 coaches since 1939. Longest such streak just 3: Frank McGuire, Dean Smith, Bill Guthridge
Duke(5): 8 coaches since 1939. Longest such streak: 2, Bill Foster and Mike Krzyzewski
Indiana(5): 10 coaches since 1939. Longest streak: 2. Bob Knight and Mike Davis
UConn(4): 10 coaches since 1939. Streak: 2, Jim Calhoun and Kevin Ollie
Louisville(3): 9 coaches since 1939. Streak: 2 Denny Crum and Rick Pitino
So, yeah, it's a big deal.
No other program in NCAA history can claim that every coach it has had since the inception of the NCAA tournament has taken a team to the Final Four at least once in his tenure.
Yes, it would have been nice to have more titles to go with those appearances.
Let's get one NEXT YEAR, Jayhawks!
