Ah, yes, the memories:

Manning certainly is highly familiar with the opponent. The star player who led Kansas to the 1988 national title was the target of barbs and taunts whenever the Jayhawks visited the Wildcats.

"One of my first games at K-State, that's a very heated rivalry, they were throwing live chickens at us," Manning said. "I remember going in there and ducking some live chickens, also some not-so-live ones out of a KFC bucket or whatever."

That was obviously a good year. :P One for the ages, in fact.

I'm sure most on here remember the full season, including the fact that the Purps (with a superstar Mitch Richmond at the helm) beat us at Allen that year...only to have Danny and the Miracles exact sweet revenge with a 71-58 win over the Purps during the Hawks' 6-game run in the tourney.

Without doing a search, can each of you RCBers name the other 2 teams that KU vanquished during that NC title run who had beaten us at Allen earlier in the season?

PS: I still have a t-shirt with the scores of the losses on the front, contrasted by the NC tourney win scores on the back. The caption at the top of front and back is:

DON'T BEAT US AT HOME...

PAYBACKS ARE A BITCH!

;) B) :cheer: :side:

This fan will be pulling big-time for the Fighting Sir Dannys tonight! Go get 'em, Danny--spread your wings!

I would say Oklahoma's one of them. Not sure of the other yet.

Yep, good job, Port.

That's probably the easiest one of the three, followed by KSU, since both were Big 8 teams...and most folks know that OU was the "dominant force" in the regular Big 8 season that year, only to be upset by that masterful KU performance at Kemper.

You'd better believe it, Wheatie!

Maybe I'll wear that shirt for Danny tonight! :silly:

Yeah, OU is definitely an easy one.

So that leaves Duke, Vandy, Murray St. and Xavier. Hmmm...

The Purps have had open lanes and easy bunnies all game long. Very hard to watch.

Purps, Puke and OU beat KU at home in that order and KU paid them all back in the same order in the tourney. Oh man Coach consonants and Abdelnaby and Ferry boy that team really reinforced my intense dislike of Puke.

Bingo!

Great memory recall, LKF_Hawk! ;)

I'll post the t-shirt image tomorrow, if time allows.

I recall the purps ended KU's then record 55 game home court winning streak, Duke won in OT after a big comeback, stinking zebras, and OU was not pretty. But what I remember most is Danny and the Miracles. I met Danny, Cedric, Milt and Coach Brown at a Comets game that year. Best thing about '88 was my 5th grade teacher was a stinking OU fan but she had to wear all KU gear for the rest of the school year after the title game.

Ha! Did she have to wear KU gear as part of losing a bet?

And tomorrow, I will be offering up my usual "no HW for 2 nights if KU wins the championship" yearly deal. I show my fifth graders the Jayhawk logo and tell them to root for that team. I like manufacturing artificial fandom :)

"Hi Portnoy! I watched the game yesterday; THE JAYHAWKS WON BY A LONG SHOT! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE GAME ON SUNDAY!"

That's exactly the kind of enthusiasm I was going for!
