As of 2016-12-31,

Self is 3 wins away from KU win #400!

HCBS needs 22 more wins to pass Roy Williams for second place on the All Time KU Wins list.
There are
18 Regular season games left,
3 Big 12 Tournament wins possible, and
6 NCAA Tournament wins possible.
TOP 3 WINNINGEST COACHES IN KUMBB HISTORY

WON-LOST HEAD COACH (W-L%) SELF's PROJECTED "Pass Year"*
590-219 Phog Allen (.729) 2023?
418-101 Roy Williams (.805) 2017?
397- 84 Bill Self (.825) [Career: 604-189 (.762)]

*The "Passing Phog" projection assumes KU averages 30 wins a year from the 2016-17 season on.
(31-6 is the average W-L record for Self KUMBB teams over the last 10 seasons [2007 thru 2016])

As previously noted:
If KU can make the Final Four this year, Self will be one short of tying RW for most FF appearances at KU.
He could then tie Roy -- in the same 15 years at KU time frame -- with another FF run next season!

For comparison, Phog only had 3 FF appearances in the 18 years -- 1939 to 1956 -- he had a chance to get KU there.
Of course, while RW had 4 FF appearances in 15 years, Phog actually won an NCAA title (1952) during his KU career and made the title game every time his team made the FF (1940, 1952, 1953). RW teams only made the title game twice in his 4 FF appearances, and sadly they never won it all.

Having said that, it is worthy of note -- if I have his numbers right, Roy will earn win #800 in his career with 4 more Ws at UNC.

... and the start on the next 100 KUMBB all time wins (TT was #2200).

And FWIW, Ol' Roy is at 797 today, going for career win #798 on the road against Danny's Demon Deacons on Wednesday. I'm rootin' for Dan the Man's squad in that one. :woohoo:

OU has lost six straight, including away losses at KSU and TCU, and a 26-point shellacking by Baylor at home. They lost by 20 to Wisconsin, and just don't have it this year.

That being said, they still have Woodard and Lattin, along with Coach Kruger. They probably view this game not only as their annual in-conference Super Bowl, but also as a game that, with a major upset win, could turn their season into something more palatable.

Coach should get his 400th, and KU should win going away. But they have to bring it, and bring it with no remorse or empathy for the foe who is having a down year. Games like this are absolute must-wins if we are to get to #13 and remain at the top of the Big 12 heap.

Get 'er done. Rock Chalk...

Their best player is hurt and won't play, it turns out.

This should be a definitive KU blowout, unless we play down to them and let them hang around. Time to put the foot on the gas pedal...

Per today's KC Star:

Self on Tuesday has a chance to win his 400th game as KU coach in his home state.

Self, an Edmond, Okla., native, takes a 399-84 mark (.826) into Tuesday’s game.

He won his 600th game in 24 seasons as a head coach on Dec. 6 against UMKC. Overall, he is 606-189 (.762). Roy Williams went 418-101 (.805) in 15 seasons at KU. Phog Allen was 590-219 (.729) in 39 seasons at KU.

Source: www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12...rticle125544924.html

What's cool about Self and this season is that he stands an outside shot of tying or surpassing Roy's victory total at KU (418), but this team would have to win 19 more, including tonight's, for a total of 33 wins and a tie...or 20 more for Self to surpass him with 419 KU wins.

If my crude math is correct, KU has up to (or around) 24 potential games left, to include two Big 12 tourney games (assuming, fingers crossed, a bye the first round) and if we were to make it all the way to the NC game. That would mean going 19-5 the rest of the way for Self to tie Roy, or 20-4 for him to surpass him. If Self were to do either, he will have accomplished it in only 14 seasons, compared with Roy's 15 at KU, and he will have done so with an even more exceptional Win-Loss percentage than Roy's (which was outstanding).

Lastly, if my crude math projections are correct, Self is on pace to catch and surpass the venerable Doc Allen about six seasons out from now (projected to be the 2022-23 season). And unless the bottom falls out, he is going to shatter the "Father of Basketball Coaching's" Win-Loss percentage as a coach at the esteemed, historical program known as the University of Kansas.

Fun with numbers on a cold Tuesday morn... :)

Rock Chalk...

Lots of milestones this season. Pretty cool.

So on paper this should be a blowout. If you're HCBS, how do you motivate your guys not to "play down" to OU (which I agree is a possibility)?

Moreover what does he already do?

For example, I wonder if he puts forth group or individual "goals" for each game with some kind of penalty/reward system. For example, it might be worth telling Devonte/Frank: keep your assist/TO ratio above 4:1 and you'll get ice cream on the bus home. Don't hit that number, and you'll PUSH the bus home.

On a team basis, win the 1st half AND win the 2nd half (outscore them in each individual half).

Anyway, just wondering what Self does to try to get guys "up" for games that look like blowouts.

I combined my "Reminder: Tuesday in Norman could be HCBS KU Win #400" OP and it's related thread into the "Tracking Bill Self Wins AY2016-17) to keep everything together. Later this week I will probably makes this a sticky post so folks can readily find it. For now I've liked it popping to the top of the regular posts with each update. (Maybe we should do a separate post and poll regarding which is preferred?)

And folks -- please feel free to comment in sticky posts such as the recruiting thread, the ATWP thread and eventually this thread.. Your questions and observations are welcomed and encouraged, and keeping the discussion in one place can help facilitate the conversation.

Good luck tonight in Norman, Self & Co!

HE, great call to merge these threads. My bad, too, for not posting my "crude math" commentary here. I just piggy-backed on your "Norman 400" post instead of researching what had been done before.

Thanks much for the solid tracking, as always!

If KU wins 33 games, he ties Roy for all-time wins at KU.

If KU wins 34 games or more (waiter, can we please have some more?), he surpasses Roy for all-time wins at KU -- and does it in one full season less than Roy, with a notably better winning percentage.

This will make it a bit easier to track, in a "big picture" way relative to the performance of our team this season.

From this keyboard to the basketball god's eyes and hands...let it be thus! :woohoo:

Good idea on the season wins perspective. I will be updating this thread after every game this season, so I will incorporate "33/34 to tie/pass in one less season" in tonight's update.

#400! in his KU career.
2017-01-10 against OU in Norman.

HCBS needs 19 more wins (34 total wins for this season) to pass Roy Williams (in just 14 years at KU compared to Roy's 15) for second place on the All Time KU Wins list.

There are potentially 24 games left for KU in AY2016-17 --
15 Regular season games left,
3 Big 12 Tournament wins possible, and
6 NCAA Tournament wins possible.

Congratulations to Roy on earning career win #800 tonight against Syracuse in The Traitor Smith Center. Second fastest coach to 800 in NCAA MBB history, taking only 1,012 games (a winning percentage of .791). Per CBSports.com, only KU alum Adolph Rupp reached 800 faster, in just 972 games.
