Rebounding: KU continues to struggle to rebound to the standards of a top tier team. We outrebounded OSU by 1 but when you break it down the numbers were not good. KU ended up shooting lights out in the 2nd half and had overall good shooting numbers for the game (59.8% Eff-FG%). So that means that a larger proportion of the rebounds were defensive rebounds for KU. That being the case, KU should have rebounded much better. In fact we grabbed 29.6% of the offensive boards and 66.7% of the defensive boards. Neither is acceptable. These should be 35% and 70% respectively. This is a real issue with this team. We have largely masked this weakness by shooting the ball crazy well and protecting the ball really well. We need better rebounding. For the season we are grabbing only 31.1% of the offensive boards. That is easily the worst in the Self era and worse than any Williams or Brown season as well. We are still doing well on the defensive end but again, that is largely because we have Frank Mason and to a lesser degree Graham rebounding very well on the defensive end. But you won't see your backcourt players hitting the offensive boards too hard since they generally need to get back on defense.

SHOOTING: KU continues to shoot lights out. We hit an Eff-FG% of 59.8 for the game against OSU. That is great. Michigan St. is the only game KU shot below 40% from the arc (20%). Since then we have been on fire. Our FT shooting continues to be enigmatic. We are hitting 46.9% of our threes for the season and we have a 59.8% Eff-FG% for the season. Anything over 55% is pretty good. Last season KU had it's worst shooting team since 199 with an Eff-FG% of 49.4%. This year it is the best. This is mostly due to the three point shooting. We are good on 2-pointers (55.1%) but not outstanding. I believe we lead the nation in 3 point shooting percentage.

OPPONENT SHOOTING: We continue to allow a better shooting percentage than we have in years gone by. OSU shot an Eff-FG% of 50%. Mostly that is because of the non-defense we played in the 1st half. Go back and watch the game and see how we played the perimeter in the 1st half. It was dreadful, mostly by Perry Ellis.

SHOT SELECTION: Capitalizing on leading the nation in 3pt shooting, KU is shooting 32.3% of their FGA's on the season from the arc. Historically KU has shot just under 30% of their shots from the arc so that is slightly up this season. For those wanting Self to turn lose the shooters, this is about a loose as you can expect. It is not even the high under Self. The 2011 Jayhawks shot 32.4% of their shots from long range. Self has made his famous "fools gold" comment and I guess he will live and dies with it. Under Self, opponents have shot 34.2% of their FGA's from the arc. So clearly other teams rely more on the three than does KU. Another noticeable stat is the FT scoring percent. KU is on track to score the fewest % of points from the FT line since 1998. The last couple years especially KU has scored about 24% of the points from the line. That is down to 18%. Part of that is the efficient shooting. The other part is poor FT shooting thus far. And part is due to the less aggressive nature of this team in scoring. Not much at all but ever so slightly.

BALL HANDLING: Along with 3 point shooting, the ball handling has been the most pleasant surprise this season. Under Self KU has averaged losing the ball on just over 19% of possessions. This season this is down to under 16%. That translates into a 4 point scoring margin improvement just from taking care of the ball. 4 points is significant. Plus, KU is assisting on 59.1% of FG's which means ball movement. There is a statistical link between assist rate and FG%. 59.1% is not anything unusual but it is much better than the past two seasons. Our overall ball handling is so much improved this season. Most importantly we have an A/TO of 1.62 which is far and away the best season ever. It will likely decrease once we hit conference play but last season it was 1.03. We are 60% better. Conversely we are holding the opponents to an A/TO of 0.68 and an assiste to FGM of 47.2%. Clearly we are pushing the oppoenenets to shots we want them to take a little more than in ypast years. We are not really getting TO's more than in the past but we do force them into specific shots. We play a man deny type defense versus a gambling pass zone of passing lane defense. It requires more vigilance but when played effectively can result in pretty good numbers.

POSSESSIONS: KU continues to be extremely efficient on offense and just average on overall defense. Our PPP offense is 1.207 which is crazy good and will not stay in conference play. Also the pace of play is up 10% on the season from 67+ in past seasons to 74.6% this season. The PPP defense is 0.932 which is average at best. Oregon St. had a PPP of 0.971. In years gone by KU strived to keep the opponent PPP below 0.9. We have not had defense that has been up to snuff for 3 years.
