BIG 12 MBB STANDINGS and OVERALL RECORDS for ACADEMIC YEAR 2023-24
See big12sports.com: Big 12 Men's Basketball Expanded Standings
(Smartphones may only show concise standings - HE)
Last season's RCB KUMBB Season Schedule & Results can be found here.
Last season's Big 12 historical season summary can be found at the end of this post. B)

Some initial comments regarding AY2023-24.
  • First, note that last season was the last for the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
  • Second, this will be the first and only season with 14 conference members. OUt are scheduled to leave for the SEC July 2024, but the Big 12 will grow to 16 teams with the return of Colorado and the additions of Arizona, Arizona State and Utah starting with AY2024-25.
  • Third, the AY2023-24 conference season will stay at 18 games, with each team playing 5 teams twice (traditional and regional rivals) and 8 teams once. NO DIVISIONS. Kansas will play --
Home-and-away: Baylor, Houston, K-State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
    Home-only: BYU, Cincinnati, TCU, Texas
Away-only: UCF, Iowa State, Texas Tech, West Virginia
  • Finally, you will no doubt note that the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament (March 12 through March 16, 2024) will start a day earlier than in past years, beginning on a Tuesday, but still ending as in previous years on the Saturday before The Road to the Final Four Selection Sunday. A quick note with the further info on the Puerto Rico exhibition games --
the Jayhawks leave the continental U.S. to play in Carolina, PR?

Okay, it's a suburb of San Juan, but still, ya gotta laugh at thought of it.

So let's
ROCK!
CHALK!
Do it again!

Another Big 12 title
and
another
N-C- AA one, too!

...as the season opener starts with another Kansas Jayhawks Men's Basketball...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

"Nobody said it wasn't going to be semi-tough." - Billy Clyde Puckett, 1977

Here's the official KU Athletics pregame write up.

NOTE WELL - KU has won a mind-boggling 50-straight home openers, beginning in 1973-74 under
Ted Owens (10-0 from 1973-74 thru 1982-83).
Larry Brown (5-0) and
Roy Williams (15-0) never lost a home opener and
Bill Self is 20-0.

ALSO NOTE WELL - Monday night's game is the final event marking the inaugural McLendon Classic at the University of Kansas!

Kansas Athletics is hosting the McLendon Classic over the weekend of November 5-6, honoring KU alum (d'37) and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member John B. McLendon, Jr and spotlighting the McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative .

In addition to Monday's game, KU will host the McLendon Classic Community Event at the Lied Center on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. CT (Free admission to all who attend). To learn more see KU Lied Center - McLendon Classic Community Event

After earning a bachelor's degree in Physical Education at KU under the guiding hand of Doc Naismith himself (at a time when blacks were not allowed to compete on school intercollegiate teams), Coach McLendon started his college coaching career in 1937 at North Carolina College for Negroes - now North Carolina Central - in Durham. He was head coach there from 1941-1952, leading the Eagles to 6 championships. He then became head coach at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) for one season before becoming head coach at Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State College (today Tennessee State University). There he became the first coach in college basketball history to win three consecutive national titles, guiding Tennessee A&I to the NAIA national championships in 1957, 1958 and 1959. McLendon pioneered basketball’s full court game, using such strategies as the fast break, the full court press, the full court zone (now known as the zone press) and the open center offense whose variants include the “four corners" offense adopted by fellow KU alum Dean Smith at North Carolina. In 38 years as a college head coach, he achieved a collegiate coaching record of 523 wins to 165 losses for a .760 winning percentage, including a 264-60 record at NCC. (Source: NCCU Athletics)

After his college coaching career (which included becoming the first black head basketball coach of a predominantly white school at Cleveland State University), he then went on to become the first black head coach in American professional sports history with the 1962 Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball League.

For more on this amazing Jayhawk, read Milton Katz' excellent biography "Breaking Through: John B. McLendon, Basketball Legend and Civil Rights Pioneer".

Needless to say - but I will anyway, of course - let's hope this latest edition of the Eagles don't surprise our Jayhawks on Monday!

And as always, I'm looking forward to seeing asteroid's write ups again this season!

Here's to a great night for all with our DEFENDING BIG 12 CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS!

P.S. -- yes, I finally got the Origin Post "Schedule & Results" up to date!
Be sure to check it out!

They aren't are our usual Manhattan foe,
But we still know how the story goes.
And tonight the odds are even more so
as the Jaspers roll
into The Phog
for another Kansas ...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

Manhattan College is a private Catholic liberal arts university originally established in Manhattan, NYC in 1853. It moved 6 miles north to the Bronx in 1922, where it has been ever since. The Jaspers currently compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and have won the MAAC tournament championship five times (1993, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2015).

Fabulous Fran Fraschilla was head coach there from 1993-96 (86-34 W-L), but the current head coach is first year HC John Gallagher, who was hired away from Hartford. Last year the Jaspers were 12-18, but Gallagher has them starting on the right foot - 1-0 with a season opening road win against the Bryant Bulldogs (I always dislike seeing BBs).

This is the first ever meeting between the two programs.
KU is 16-1 against current membership of the MAAC -
4-1 vs. Iona
3-0 vs. Rider
2-0 vs. Canisius
2-0 vs. Niagara
2-0 vs. Saint Peter’s
2-0 vs. Siena
1-0 vs. Fairfield.
KU last faced a MAAC team in 2021 when it defeated Iona, 93-83, on Nov. 28, 2021 in the opening round of the
ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Florida.
(source: pre-Game Notes linked below).

The ESPN Matchup predictor favors KU to win by a very healthy 98.6%, with a 35.5 spread favoring the home team.

gojaspers.com: Jaspers Travel to No. 1 Kansas This Friday

This is the last AFH game before traveling to Chicago to play UK in the Champions Classic on ESPN 8:30 CT Tuesday Nov 13.

It is the classic definition of a trap game, so what we want to see is KU coning out firing on all cylinders once again and a second game of 4-5 minutes of KU Team 2 time at the end.

Here's to another great night for Jayhawk Nation with our DEFENDING BIG 12 CHAMPION KANSAS JAYHAWKS!

It's WILDCAT SKINNING TIME! for our
KANSAS JAYHAWKS!

Yes, Ladies & Gentlemen and Jayhawks fans of all ages, it's time once again for the Jayhawks of Kansas to take on one of its legacy programs -- and one of the few programs in the country that can actually claim a winning record (KU 11-24) against our beloved ballers!

We've got another KANSAS JAYHAWK...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!!

Once again the State Farm Champions Classic rolls around and our #1/1 Jayhawks (2-0) take on the #17/16 Wildcats of Kentucky (2-0). The top two winningest men's basketball programs in NCAA Division 1 history go at it with just 5 victories separating UK (2377) from KU (2372), and our Jayhawks aiming to make that margin 4 and the all-time head to head Won-Lost record 12-24!

With Head Coach Bill Self back at the helm after last season's health issues, KU looks poised to make some noise!

INJURIES
Walk-ons Wilder Evers (foot) and Patrick Cassidy (ankle) are the only questionables for KU.

It's MAUI INVITATIONAL TIME for our
KANSAS JAYHAWKS!

Alo-HA!

Yes, Ladies & Gentlemen and Jayhawks fans of all ages, once again our KANSAS JAYHAWKS men's hoops squad is in the Hawai'ian Islands to play in the Maui Invitational. I'm sure all will recall that this year's tourney is being played in Honolulu, Oahu in the Stan Sherriff Center on the campus of The University of Hawai'i - Manoa due to the wildfires that devastated Lahaina and other parts of Maui back in August. (See CNN for the latest update as of 2023-11-18)

That's why they are on Oahu, where we've got another KANSAS JAYHAWK...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!!

This year's tournament field is one of the best ever, probably for any preseason tournament.
AP/CP (data as of 2023-11-19)
RANK TEAM CONF W-L
n/a Chaminade Silverswords	D2	(1-2) Host school
#1/1 KANSAS JAYHAWKS Big 12	(3-0)

#2/2 Purdue Boilermakers	B1G	(3-0)
#11/12 Gonzaga Bulldogs WCC	(2-0)

#4/5 Marquette Golden Eagles B East	(3-0)
#29/25 UCLA Bruins Pac-12 (3-0)

#7/8 Tennessee Volunteers	SEC	(3-0)
-/- Syracuse Orangemen	ACC	(3-0)
MI Bracket with TV and Times

Chaminade first became a glint in the eye of the public back around Christmas 1982 (the Maui Invitational began in1984) when the eventual 1983 NAIA National Runner-up upset top ranked Virginia and everybody's All-American and eventual 3 time Player of the Year Ralph Sampson.
NCAA.com: The unthinkable upset, 40 years later: Chaminade shocks No. 1 Virginia in 1982 by Mike Lopresti, 2022-12-23

Two years later the "Silverswords Tournament" was born on The Big Island, with Chaminade defeating Davidson before losing to Providence (who had beaten... wait for it... yes, Virginia) in the title game. The tournament moved to Maui and changed over the years to become the current 8 team, 3 game format we will see this year.

Chaminade is now 8-96 in Maui Invitational history, but the upsets along the way in Maui have been fun to watch for everyone but the losing teams and their fans.

Here all all 8 Silverswords wins.
YEAR	OPPONENT SCORE
1984	Davidson 77-62
1991	Providence	111-108
1992	Stanford 71-63 (2OT)
2003	Villanova 52-49
2007	Princeton 74-70
2010	Oklahoma 68-64
2012	Texas 86-73
2017	Cal 96-72
NCAA.com: The complete history of Chaminade at the Maui Invitational by Wayne Cavadi, 2021-11-24

Reading the Cavadi article you will note (as you may have forgotten, as I had) that Chaminade had appeared in every Maui Invitational from 1984 to 2017, but that changed in 2018. Starting that year the tournament changed things up so that Chaminade will play in a "mainland" preseason tournament in even years but return to the Maui tournament in odd years. Hmm...ESPN?

Washington Post: Chaminade created the Maui Invitational. Now it’s not in the field.
- Perspective by John Feinstein 2018-08-03
(viewable without a subscription)

By the way, if you always thought that Maui was comparable to a Kansas "KC home court advantage" for the Honolulu based school --
The Stan Sherriff Center is 1.5 miles from the Chaminade campus.
Yep, a 7 minute drive (it is Honolulu, after all...)

ALL-TIME SERIES KANSAS vs CHAMINADE
KANSAS leads 2-0, both in the MI (2015, 2019)

INJURIES
Walk-ons Wilder Evers (foot) and Patrick Cassidy (ankle) are the only questionables for KU.

No one reported injured for Chaminade.

The Panthers go a-hunting in the Cradle of the Game.
Inside the temple monument they take their shot at fame.
The odds against them, yes, but they know that it's been done
And they hope to add their names to the list of foes who've won.

The Jayhawks take home court again
Searching in The Phog for yet
Another non-con victory to enter in the log.
With expectations heady, but still ready for a fight
They're Panther pelt a-hunting on another JAYHAWK...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!!

Our #5/6 JAYHAWKS (5-1) take on the unranked Panthers of Eastern Illinois (3-4) in the Mecca of College Basketball, Allen Fieldhouse, at the Cradle of the Game, The University of Kansas. This is the first ever meeting for the programs.

Eastern Illinois is located in Charleston, IL, roughly 140 miles ENE of St. Louis, MO and essentially 420 miles east of The Phog. Established in 1895 as a teachers' school, it gradually grew into a broad curriculum university to better serve the people of Illinois. The list of notable alumni or "ex's" is quite impressive, with the following from the entertainment and sports industries jumping out at this grumpy old man - singer/actor Burl Ives, actor Joan Allen, actor John Malkovich, actor Jerry Van Dyke, former KC Royals Marty Pattin and Kevin Seitzer, NFL Super Bowl champion coaches Sean Payton and Mike Shanahan, former NFL quarterback Tony Romo and current SF 49er QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

ALL-TIME SERIES KANSAS vs EASTERN ILLINOIS
This is their first meeting.

Note that while the Panthers are 3-4 (winless on the road), they did win two of their last 3 games. Their last game was a home court 85-39 triumph over Eureka on Saturday.

INJURIES
Walk-ons Wilder Evers (foot) and Patrick Cassidy (ankle) are the only questionables for KU.

No injuries reported for EIU.

The defending National Champions of 2023 travel to The Cradle of the Game to take on the National Champions of 2022 in another JAYHAWK...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!!

Our #5/6 JAYHAWKS (6-1) take on the #4/4 Huskies of Connecticut (7-0) in the Mecca of College Basketball, Allen Fieldhouse!

The Huskies are relative newcomers to the multiple National Championship field, winning their 5 titles in the most recent 25 seasons (Jim Calhoun 1999, 2004, 2011; Kevin Ollie 2014; Dan Hurley 2023). The recency of their excellence shows in their being the only program with 4 or more NCAA titles that is NOT in the Top 25 listing of All-Time Winning Programs (they are currently ranked 26).

ALL-TIME SERIES KANSAS vs CONNECTICUT
KANSAS LEADS 3-0
Lawrence, KS (AFH) 0-0
Storrs/Hartford (XL Center) 1-0 (1-0) 1997-01-19
Neutral Sites 2-0 (1-0 Kemper Arena 1995-01-28; 1-0 Des Moines G2 NCAA South Regional 2016-03-19)

UConn alternates playing home games on campus in Storrs in the Gampel Pavilion and in Hartford at the XL Center.
Unlike KU playing a game or two in KC during the season, the XL Center truly is a "home" court for the Huskies.

INJURIES

(72.3%?!? Uh, no. Not only no, but hell no. Simply does not pass the eye test, and the "tests" of the other systems out there.
If we are lucky we will see a Battle Royale Friday Night.
If we are not -- UConn is on a tear and has beaten non-conference opponents by double digits an NCAA record 24 straight games. They are not at all quiet about wanting to make KU #25. - HE)

Saturday
Not in The Phog
It's KU's first true ROAD GAME this year.

Saturday
in Bloomington
Our cagers have a big goose egg there.

KJ ailing?
Will he play there?
Some real consternation... being felt by all

Jayhawks fans around the world say
"They can win it!"
"Yes they can!"

And we've been waiting such a long time... for Saturday... and another...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Our #2/2 Jayhawks (9-1) travel to the home of the Hurryin' Hoosiers of unranked Indiana (7-2 overall, but 5-0 at home so far this season) to try to wrest their first ever win against IU in Bloomington and even the historical record at 8-8! Indiana's only losses so far this season are to UConn in Madison Square Garden (a setup definitely favoring the Huskies) and on Dec 9 at Auburn in their most recent game.

BIG CONCERN -- KJ Adams, Jr has been ill this week and we are waiting to learn whether he will play or not. He did travel with the team today, but there has been no word of his status beyond that. Big, BIG loss if he cannot play against IU.

A potential emotional power point for IU - Thursday morning former Hoosier and Naismith Hall of Famer George McGinnis died unexpectedly from a heart attack. He was 73. CBSSports.com - George McGinnis dies at 73

Everyone’s watching to see what Yale will do
Here in The Phog against ol’ KU.
Everyone thinking the Eli won’t come through

Jayhawks fans are hoping for a great game!

Hoping that our Jayhawks give Yale hell!

Our #2/2 Jayhawks (10-1) host the Ivy League bastion Yale Bulldogs (7-5) in venerable Allen Fieldhouse! Last season the Bulldogs ended up 20–7, 10–4 in Ivy League play to finish in a tie for 1st place. In the Ivy Tournament, they defeated Cornell in the semifinals, before losing to Princeton in the championship game and ending up going to the NIT where they lost in round 1 to Vanderbilt. This year they are off to a rough start, already earning Ls against the likes of Gonzaga (nothing to be ashamed of there), Big Sky member Weber St (7-4), Rhode Island (5-7), Vermont (9-4) and Metro Atlantic member Fairfield (6-6).

It's been a long time since we played them,
30 years have gone by.
If another 30 passed most KU fans would not blink an eye.

We don't need the in-state tsoris.
We don't need the constant whines
As the Wichita State men
go down one more time...
... on another...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Our #2/2 Jayhawks (11-1) travel to the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City to play the unranked Wichita State Shockers (8-4 overall, losers of 3 of their last 4 -- all by double digits) for the first time in regular season play since January 1993.

Frankly I was surprised to realize that the two programs have only faced each other 15 times on the hardcourt, despite essentially existing "side-by-side" for 118 years, and WSU having some great success over those years. I had thought the # to be at least up in the 30s. I do not know what happened after 1993 to keep the two apart, but imagine that Mark Turgeon (HC 2000-2007) never really wanted to play his alma mater, and then Gregg Marshall took over until fired for being himself in 2020. Sure, there was the "what's the upside for KU to play them?" question, but in the end I think the departure of Marshall, Bill Self's second NC and THE $$$$$ finally made it possible. It should be noted that Bill Self is reportedly the one who initiated the talks to get this game set up. I have not seen anything yet about any future games.

I would imagine few know (or remember, as the case may be) that WSU was the beginning for KANSAS alum Ralph Miller's Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame college coaching career {Wichita St (1951-64), Iowa (1964-70) and Oregon State (1970-1989)}. While at KU Miller lettered 3 times in football and basketball, the latter under the tutelage of Phog Allen. When Miller retired from coaching at age 70 in 1989 his 657 wins led all active coaches and was 7th all-time.

in Lawrence (AFH) 4-0 (4-0)

KANSAS has never beaten WSU in the NCAA Tournament (0-2)
Bill Self (0-1) and Ted Owens (0-1) are the only KU coaches with a losing record
against WSU.

Our #2/2 Jayhawks (12-1) host the unranked Horned Frogs of TCU (11-2) in venerable Allen Fieldhouse, aka "The PHOG!",
as KANSAS recognizes the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Final Four team, with then head coach Ted Owens and many of his players and staff in attendance.

The last time these two programs met in The Phog the Frogs pummeled our guys 83-60, and HCBS has been using the recording of that game to help the guys prepare for Saturday! No repeats, please, and thank you!

Kansas has won 32-straight conference openers dating back to the 1991-92 season, with 13 of those at home in Allen Fieldhouse and 19 on the road. The last time Kansas lost a league opener was at Oklahoma, 88-82, on Jan. 8, 1991. This will be the second time Kansas will face TCU in the league opener since then. KU defeated TCU, 86-80, on Dec. 30, 2016, in Fort Worth in the
AY2016-17 Big 12 opener.

Note well -- the Flagrant 1 by Udeh mentioned in this article was NOT "highly questionable" as stated in the preview. *Every* official who has seen the play has said it was the right call, and note that the game stoppage did not occur until the TCU player turned back to end the break, which is when the official blew the whistle to stop play. Sour grapes on display all over social media by people who have lots of bias but NO CLUE.

Sooner? No, later
KU’s gonna win it!
Sooner? No way, man!
KU’s gonna win!

on another Allen Fieldhouse...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Game 3 of the KU Big 12 season see our guys (#3/3 for now, 13-2/1-1 Big 12) hosting the surprising Sooners of for now #9/9 Oklahoma (13-2, 1-1). Game 3 of the 18 game Big 12 season and HCBS is already declaring games as “must win” because of the depth of the conference – and frankly, the weaknesses of this Jayhawks Men’s basketball team.

Of particular note supporting that last comment, it’s the middle of January and HCBS has changed the starting lineup, something he is loath to do sans really good reason. Elmarko Jackson has lost his starting slot to fellow freshman Johnny Furphy. Clearly HCBS is looking for more firepower in the starting 5, something that Jackson has not been providing. My question is does Furphy come in as G2, or does Kevin McCullar shift from G3 to G2 and Furphy takes the G3 role? The latter makes sense to me given Kevin’s ball handling experience and ability to make his own shot. It also means (at least to me) that Jackson can come in for Harris (EJ was always projected as a PG from the start) and Timberlake comes in to sub Kevin or Johnny.

OU also lost its last game, losing at TCU on Wednesday, so they are also looking to get back on track as well.

The bal-chatri of Gallagher-Iba awaits!
on another...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

Big 12 Game 4 for our #3/4 Jayhawks (14-2, 2-1) finds our Crimson & Blue Boys visiting the bal-chatri of Bill Self's college days in Stillwater, Oklahoma to play the unranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State (8-8, 0-3).

The Gallagher-Iba bal-chatri (bird of prey trap) has been problematic for Bill's Boys. Entering AY2018-19, Self's KU teams were 4-7 in GIA. Since then his teams have been 4-1, including winning there in the last two appearances, to bring that record to 8-8. Here's hoping the Boys in Blue can make it 9-8 and earn KU's first conference road win of the season.

Also of note is that KU is on a 5 game overall winning streak against the Pokes, winning 10 of the last 11 games played dating back to the 2018 Big 12 Tournament.

Ok, ok, if you take the 2018 win out it's still 9 of the last 10, but Self is still 8-8 in GIA because the only KU win over OKSt in 2018 came in the Sprint Center.

KANSAS-OKSt SERIES: 123-60 thru 2024-01-15 (excludes 1 vacated 2018 win)
The interesting thing that I do not have time to investigate tonight is that the Game Notes agree with the Final 2023 Media Guide after allowing for the 1 win from 2018 that was vacated. But the details on how the wins are spread out do not match from one document to the other even after allowing for the vacated win, so I'm going to suggest just go with the Game Day notes linked below as KU Communications may have found corrections since the Media Guide was published.
