He made the wrong choice.
I have never been so irate at a coach for being bull headed as I am right now with Self.
We still might have lost, but the odds would have been a lot better without Dok in the game late.

Self is to blame, unless . . . . . .
What happens in a month and a half when we are in the same position (and we will be) but Udunkie comes through because he knows HCBS believes in him? Yea, I know, until that happens . . .

A major part of every coach’s job is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of his players and adjust his strategy and tactics according to those and the game situation.Hawknmo wrote: You can say all you want about the youth and inexperience of these players. The simple truth is his player was put in a position to win the game and did not execute. Sure, there is an argument for offense/defense subbing. It still doesn’t take away the fact that if one player could hit half their FTs this is a different outcome. For all his rim rattling power and ability, that same player has a glaring weakness. I dare say Coach Kruger will not be the last to employ this strategy. Right now its working. Surely there is some corrective action that can be taken.
Did UA going to learn how to shoot FTs in the last 3 days?
If HCBS saw something in practice that made him think UA would do okay tonight, ok, that’s a reason to give him a chance.
But after a full game where he had shown he was still not ready for Prime Time at the line, the second chance (of four straight KU possessions) should have been UAs last!
I feel for the kid, and truly hope he learns to shoot FTs.
But tonight Self failed as a game coach by not benching him to at least give his team a chance to score as the game clock was running down.
Kruger beat him at late game management, pure and simple.

And you are right, subbing would not have guaranteed a W, but if done while we still had the lead it might have made the difference.
We all know - as does Self - that Dok is a disaster at the line, as close to no real chance to score as you can find in college basketball.
No real chance versus a chance?
Give me “a chance” every bloody time.

Maybe. But if he had even hit one, miss one...maybe Kruger changes strategy. Maybe not. Just one more challenge for an already challenging season.

7 free throws missed=7 empty possessions=the failure to sub someone for Doke who could hit from the charity stripe=the loss. BTW, if Doke has been practicing "harder on free throws than anyone else," as Gurley and friend said, why hasn't he improved? My thought is he hasn't been learning from his missed shots, he just does the same thing over and over no matter how many practice shots he takes. Someone should educate him on the mind/body connection system. I love the guy, but there should be a clear rule by HCBS that he'd give no other coach the opportunity to play HOKE-A-DOKE!
To make matters worse, most of the commentators' comments all night long were singing the praises of the great god Trae Young. It got very tiresome.

For god-sakes, teach the kid a different technique! We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I really feel sorry for him. He's not been taught properly and he was singled out in the spotlight by Kruger tonight. So not only did Self not sub to try and stem the bleeding to win, he participated in the embarrassment and shaming of a poor young kid, who by the look on his face took the loss entirely on his shoulders.
Not good. And we'll see this a LOT going forward if we don't develop a counter.
