The Lady Jayhawks came back from a twelve-point second-half deficit to beat the Golden Gophers from Minnesota in overtime 62-53, in their second game of the Hawaiian Regent Wahine Basketball Classic.
Kansas should have won the game in regulation. They took the lead for the first time with about 40 seconds left at 51-48, and there were only 17 seconds left on the clock after a scoreless exchange of possession. With only 5 team fouls, the Lady Jayhawks had a foul to give and should have fouled during the final seconds to prevent Minnesota from setting up their final shot, but they did get a successful three-point shot off, after which only 0.7 seconds remained in the game. A full court shot by Kansas hit the backboard, but did not go in, setting up the overtime.
In the overtime, it was all Kansas, which came out of the second half with all the momentum, save for Minnesota's final three-point shot. The Lady Jayhawks put up another 11 points on the scoreboard to Minnesota's 2.
It was a big win for Kansas, which couldn't do much of anything right in the first half, watching the Golden Gophers build a 25-14 lead. They stretched that lead to as much as 12 points early in the second half, but then Kansas caught fire, led by leading scorer Lynn Pride. Most of the remainder of the scoring came from Johnson and Raymant, though Raymant went down with about a minute left in overtime, as Minnesota was fouling to try and regain possession. I spotted her on the bench with an ice pack on her left knee; the extent of the injury isn't known.
Kansas plays Hawaii on Sunday in the final game of the Classic.
