North Carolina had the former and Kansas had the latter.
In the season opener for both teams, the Tar Heels handled the Jayhawks with ease on Sunday afternoon, winning 76-58. UNC's Juana Brown led all scorers with 27 points on 10-17 shooting. Lynn Pride led Kansas with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Jayhawks came out strong in the first half. Kansas was able to get the ball to Nakia Sanford, Jaclyn Johnson and Lynn Pride on the interior. When they missed shots, the Jayhawks' taller lineup was outrebounding North Carolina. At one point, Kansas led 21-14. Unfortunately for Kansas, the wheels fell off the wagon. |
North Carolina keyed on the perimeter shooting of guards Jennifer Jackson and Suzi Raymant. The pair only took two three-pointers. Overall, they were 4-16 shooting.
Today's game marked the first season opening loss for Kansas since 1992-93 when the Jayhawks were downed by Minnesota.
The Jayhawks return to action this weekend on the Hawaiian Islands. Kansas will face UMass, Minnesota and Hawaii in successive days at the Hawaiian Regent Classic.
