2/24 - Word has it there are going to be 6 walkons participating in spring drills this year. There will probably be several more highschool players given "preferred" walkon status for this fall.
2/3 - 10:45 p.m. - Listened to TA on WIBW in Topeka. Had several interesting comments. Reported a 22nd commitment which was also no surprise, Randell Hendley, as putting them at "99%" done for recruiting. I will put a copy of a summary of his comments on the 1999 Spring News & Comments page. 11:50 a.m. - The only surprise name so far isn't a big "surprise" as offensive lineman Kregg Schmidt from Garden City signed after rumors of a possible offer. He may be the only new name for the day with the LOI count at 21. 10:50 a.m. - I will update this page a couple times during the day as any reports come in. The first news on today wasn't good as Cliff Holloman did an 180 over night and signed this morning with KSU. Everyone was surprised that he was leaning to KU yesterday so this should not be a surprise.
1/28 - Some of the most important decisions being made about recruiting has nothing to do with player evaluations. The future of KU football is being determined by several things and some of the most important has to do with the conditions of the existing facilities. UT and A&M have wonderful facilities and schools in the old Big 8 are making changes to keep up with the Texans. There are two articles in the LJW today worth reading. The first article is about facility improvements and the second one is an article specifically about a new training center.
12/7/98 - Wichita Eagle State Top 33
Wichita Eagle All Classes
12/2/98 - The biggest news in recruiting involves someone who hasn't been in high school for a long time. Terry Allen is staying at Lawrence, KS! There should be confirmation on some of the recent verbals reported in the news now with this decision. This is also good as they can begin in-home contacts with the clear understanding that TA is at KU and if he wasn't leaving for Iowa it is less likely he would ever leave for any other school. The positive spin on all this is KU has a good coach and what he has accomplished has been noticed by others, enough to be considered for a prime coaching position. This makes the four commitments pretty solid now and overall a good start on the recruiting process. The KC Star has an article on line.
11/25 - TA talked about needs for next year in this KC Star article. . Read to close the season.
9/25 - The Topeka Capital-Journal has an article about the top recruits in Kansas They also had another on top sophomores.

Lemming's Top 200, No. 103 QB by RecruitingNow Run & Shoot offense, passed for 3400 yds over soph and junior years. Good athlete with strong arm. Benches 305. Prefers regional school but may visit most of the above mentioned schools. Attended KSU and KU camps. 10/20-Zach is having a very good year even if he isn't putting up the same numbers as previous years due to an offensive scheme change. He is getting serious interest from at least the top three schools and maybe more. He is noticably stronger and bigger but still athletic. While he would make a great DB, he has played well enough to get serious consideration as a QB. 10/30 - MO-KAN is reporting that Zach has set up visits to KU on Dec.11th and KSU on Dec. 18th. He was in attendence at the KU/CU game. 12/1 - Zach has indicated he would attend KU but that is probably contingent on stability with the coaching staff. Mo-Kan first reported this commitment. Zach is a tremendous athlete who could play other positions as well. Recruiting Now has him as the No. 103 rated QB. Still making visit to KSU apparently. 12/2 - Zach's 1998 stats were 102 of 162 passing for 1,246 yards, 6 TDs and 6 INTs in his 3rd year starting for Olathe South. His numbers were down this year as South switched to a more run oriented attack finishing with their best record under Zach at QB. His career stats at South were 4,660 passing yards and 39 TDs. 2nd Team All-State. |

Season stats - 2268 yards, 18 TDs, 154 of 291. All-State 5A, 1st team all-district and district offensive MVP. He is comfortable as a drop back or scrambling QB. |

12/11 - Reportedly in for a visit on 12/11. 12/20 - An OU bbs is reporting that Dylan verballed to KU but that qualifying may be a problem. I place this report in the very seriously questioned column. Dylen is to make a visit on 1/8 but may be in question with coaching change. 1/7 - MO-KAN is reporting that Dylen (pronounced "Die len") Smith is still being recruited by KU. In the Cali JUCO championship bowl game Dylen passed for 400 yards on 38 completions for 51 attempts. Descriptions would make one think of Michael Bishop in athleticism and style. The CU QB would also come to mind possibly. 1/17 - Expect to hear his decision this week. 1/18 - Well, we didn't have all week to wait! Dylen has commited according to MOKAN!! 1/19 - 1998 Stats - 2890 yds passing, 28 TDs, 8 Ints, 400 yds rushing. JuCo Career Stats - 5,147 yds, 44 TDs, 15 INTs. Will enroll in fall. Some hours yet to complete this summer which probably caused some schools to pass on recruiting him. Earned HM NJCAA A-A, Cali All-State and All-conference. Among Max Emfinger's top 100 JuCo players. 1/20 - KCStar Article on Dylen 2/16 - I have heard that Dylen should graduation requirements this spring and should be in Lawrence for the summer participating in 7 on 7 scrimmages. Those are a big boost for incoming players. A lot of freshmen typically participate in these as well. |

Burton's TX Top 75. No. 16 Lone Star 100, Star-Tele Texas Top 100, No. 18 K-EYE Top 42. 1998 - Super Prep AA, 1st Team All-State. Rumored to lean to LSU strongly. 1997 - 2,400 yds & 19 TD's. 2 games of 300+ yards (career best 311 yds vs. Round Rock Westwood). Squats 600+ lbs. Named offensive MVP District 13-5A. Attended Ole Miss & Texas camps. 12/16 - Reggie, who is back to full strength from his hamstring problems, intends to make all his visits, including the upcoming visits to OSU and KU. He reportedly enjoyed both visits to LSU and A&M, especially the food! 12/17 - Reggie is the No.25 rated RB by RecruitingNow. He currently has a 3.0 GPA. No word on qualifying. 1/19 - LJW reports that Reggie is still interested in visiting KU since teammate Carl Ivey committed to KU despite commitment to A&M. 1/31 - Made a late visit to KU and by all reports really enjoyed his visit. With A&M having so many RB commitments, he might reconsider and head north! 2/2 - Whooop!! MOKAN reports that Reggie has decided to join former teammate Reggie Duncan at KU!!! Many consider Reggie the best RB in Texas. He didn't have eye popping numbers this year (1200 yds, 8 TDs) while playing with a bad hamstring but was the state's leading rusher as a junior. |

Lemming's Top 200. Grades could be problem. 12/21 - While he may be going the JuCo route, schools are still talking to him as he will be a major recruit in two years. They see him as a line backer rather than RB. His former teammate, Junis McDowell, had a trememdous year at Butler CC with 39 tackles for loss, 18 were QB sacks. |

Getting a lot of attention. Speed guy for wide-open offense. Strong track runner, only Mario Ponds regularly outran him last year. Injured last two years but good stats when healthy (broke ankle in 2nd game last year). 11/6 - MO-KAN reports that Matt has made unoffical trips to KSU and KU. Matt is having a very good year. 2/7 - Strong possibility that Matt will be offered a preferred walkon status for next fall. Currently weighing options. Despite reservations that some recruiters had about his size and durability, there is no doubting his speed. 2/12 - Reportedly enrolling to play at Harvard. I am assuming he will receive academic scholarship to attend. Could have a very successful career there.

12/26 - Rated No. 39 RB by Recruiting Now. One of the top players at the summer Miami NIKE camp. 37" vertical, 19 reps on the bench, ran 4.20 shuttle. Missed first 5 games, but came back strong in his first game back with a 240 yard, four TD effort. Ran a 4.3 40 at the Miami Combine and benches 385 and squats 545. Reportedly coming in for a January visit by Emfinger's Super Dixie list. 1/17 - RecruitingNow is reporting that Harold will visit KU on 1/22 and Miami on 1/29 after visiting FSU on 1/15. He puts the three as pretty much even but did note that he really enjoyed his visit to FSU. 1/25 - WOW!!! Harold is a big time player. MOKAN (who broke the commitment) quotes his coach Craig Howard as saying, "He's got such good breakaway speed and also has tremendous strength. He's a slashing runner. Kansas is getting a good one." His coach was also quoted as saying, "Coach Todd Middleton did a good job recruiting Harold,". He made his visit and apparently was sold on the idea of heading to Lawrence. Congrats coaches! His 1998 stats (after missing the first 5 games) were 1268 yards and 18 TDs. He was selected to the Jacksonville Super 11, North Florida Top 24 and was rated No. 85 in Florida Top 100. Harold broke the school record for career yards as a three year starter at RB. |

12/22 - MO-KAN broke another commitment for KU. This 1st team all-district performer will be joining teammate Derick Mills next fall in Lawrence. Still wants to visit Purdue to see what they had to offer as a school despite pledge to coach Wyatt. Recruiting Now has him rated as the No. 85 TE. KU reportedly told him he was their number 1 TE prospect. Excellent student with 3.7 gpa and 1050 standardized test score. 1/14 - Adrian picked KU because he would get to play in a spread offense according to an article in the Dallas Morning News. He was not certain he would visit Purdue yet or not. 1/17 - Team mate Randell Hendley is visiting tomorrow. A commitment by Randell may help solidify Adrian's thoughts about his commitment. This would give KU three players from one of the strongest HS programs historically in Texas. 1/21 - Purdue received a commitment from a TE reported by FansOnly today. This may have a positive impact on Adrian's commitment to Kansas! 1/26 - Purdue picked up a second TE commitment. Probably unlikely that Adrian is still considering Purdue. It isn't clear though that Jason will qualify yet which could impact interest in February. 1/10 - Jason's coach believes that he is better at this point than KSU star Jeremy Martin was. He should know he coached both players. It is a little perplexing why Jason hasn't had more contact by coaches but that could all change as February approaches. |

Lawrence, KS Free State
| : KSU, OU, MU
Rated 89th in Midlands by Superprep. Played two years. Moved from LB to DE. Dad played at KU. Indicated he will continue to talk to schools. Yet to qualify with some concern. 12/14 - From Bobby Burton of RecruitingNow. "I'm not really thinking about where I'm going to go to school until I qualify," said Lawrence (Kan.) Free State tight end Dijon Dillon, who had committed to Kansas but is still looking at Kansas State. "I'm still keeping my options open. I'm going to also look at some jucos like Fort Scott, Hutchinson and Coffeyville." Dillon said he is still is working on setting up official visits to Kansas and K-State. Those trips are expected to take place in January. From these statements, it looks like it is far from over with Dijon, both academically and prospectus for signing if he does. 12/22 - Dijon says he has a decision but would not report it until he has a chance to talk to the KU coaches. It is kind of difficult to tell exactly which way he is leaning. Additionally, his decision will be complicated by whether or not Dijon will be able to qualify. He might have decided to head the JuCo route initially no matter what to improve his academic standing and to gain more experience. It did sound like there would be news soon. 1/13 - MOKAN reports that Dijon will announce his decision next week. 1/15 - While Dijon has said he has made up his mind, he will make an "official" visit to KU this weekend. This will give the KU coaches one last opportunity to show Dijon the progress that can be anticipated by the team next year. 1/20 - Apparently, according to MOKAN Recruiting, Dijon has decided to honor his commitment to KU. This was after talking to his coach following the weekend visit to KU. Dijon still needs to qualify academically. Whoop!! He is a quality player and goes a long way to building a group of solid linemen for the future. 1/23 - Dijon was quoted in an article on the LJW site that he has scored an 18 on the SAT and will focus on getting his GPA up to qualify rather than try and return for basketball after injuring his knee. |

KU has indicated that they are very open to whatever Shaun wants to do in football. I read in that that Shaun would decide whether he wants to redshirt or not and whether he played offense or defense. I would assume that most schools are recruiting him as a D-Lineman but Shaun may want to give it a try at LB. He is definitely athletic enough to give it a try and could be successful unless he continues to get bigger. Then he may want to put that speed on the line. 2/16 - Look for Shaun to be a major recruit in a couple of years. |

Awesome athlete, tallied over 70 tackles, 12 sacks, 10CF's, and 25TFL's". Has continued playing basketball and therefore hasn't muscled up to fullest potential. A year in the weight room could see a tremendous rush end as a result. Tony has just turned 17 so he still has a lot of physical maturity ahead of him. He hopes to redshirt next year. Tony has a big frame, feet and hands indicating that the three year player could still grow some. 1/27 - PrepStar Regional All-American |

1/17 - RecruitingNow is reporting that Randell will be on campus tomorrow. Two other teammates are already commited to KU. Randell is a highly rated LB in the state of Texas. Randell had earlier in the process commited to A&M but the Aggies either retracted their offer or Randell reopened recruiting - it isn't clear. His mother reports that KU has really gotten involved the last couple of weeks. At this point it appears it may be between ISU and Kansas and with two other teammate already commited KU may have a good shot at receiving a verbal from Randell. 1/24 - He did not make the trip to Okie State as planned and is basically waiting for the offer from Kansas. If not, he will trip to Baylor. It sounds like KU is in the drivers seat for Randell. 2/3 - KU made the offer and Randell signed later in day. |

1/26 - MOKAN (who broke the commitment) quotes Glenn's coach as saying he has the frame to add size. "He's going to get bigger," said coach Gordon Gramer. "He could play at 250, 255 and not lose any speed off his 4.6 time." The TC-J quotes his coach as saying, "He's runs really well. He's got good height and long arms and quick feet. He's got everything he needs to play that game." Rated the No. 57 player in the Midlands by SuperPrep, he recorded 150 tackles, 17 sacks, 6 fumble recoveries and 11 passes broken up in his HS career. Ironic that KU lost a Kansan to CSU, they lost a Coloradoan to KU. Looks like both were players and should have fine college careers at their respective schools. 1/27 - Robert Allen who I believe is with First Down Recruiting reported Glenn is the 8th rated player in Colorado. |

MO-KAN broke this commitment first. Described as very quick to the ball. Great pursuer. Two-time All-Arizona Athletic Conference. First-team all-region selection as a sophomore and an All-America candidate. 143 tackles last season, including 11 for losses and two sacks. He was named team MVP for the 2-8 Artichokes. Scott will enroll for the spring semester. Scott was KU's top prospect for a JC LB. Very strong with a 425 bench press. Spring enrollee. |

1/17 - MOKAN reported this commitment tonight after talking to Carl's mother which follows Carl's visit this weekend. Carl was 1st team all-state 5A which is Texas' largest class. 1/19 - The LJW reports Carl's senior stats as - 32 tackles, 4 INTs, 5 forced fumbles, 1fumble recovery. 3 INTs went for TDs including one for 100 yds. Carl needs to improve his SAT score to be a full qualifier. Long time friend of David Winbush. |

Named to some all-state teams in FB as junior. 2/5 - Considering being a "preferred walkon" versus Navy. Taking a paid trip this weekend to Annapolis. 3/23 - Has turned down a LOI offer from Navy for a "preferred walkon" spot next year with KU. He was all-state Class 5A at QB. He will play in Shrine Bowl as WR and Punter. Look for him to play the same at KU. Matt had also turned down an Ivy league school to play basketball. |

1/15 - MO-KAN broke this commitment yesterday and confirmed by RecruitingNow. Carl is a big time athlete named NJCAA A-A for his athleticism. They didn't have a catagory for "Athlete" so he was named A-A as a KR. He played QB his freshman year but moved to WR/KR his sophomore year the the 1998 NJCAA National Champions. They won the title due to two tremendous KR setting up two short field TDs. He is a perfect fit for the A-Back position in KU's offense, big and fast, able to run across the middle or fade deep with LB coverage. Truely an impact player. He led the team as a receiver with 30 passes for 411 yards and two touchdowns, kick returns by averaging 37 yards on 15 runbacks and scoring three TDs. LJW article says Carl will enroll this fall. Good enough athlete to play anywhere - even on defense. |

He will count against next years class. Another report indicates that the status of TA could affect Joey's decision to return to KU. This commitment was first reported by MO-KAN Recruiting. Spring enrollee. |
