2000 Recruits 2000 Former Targets

5/8/00 - Well! How quickly things can change with highschool kids. Last week the west coast news media had DeShawn Stevenson packing for the NBA, all signed sealed and delivered by his letter, and this morning he is headed to KU! The TCJ's article also indicated that this was DeShawn's decision due to learning he had passed his SAT. Apparently he had not met with KU coaches yet when he learned the results and did the about face. WHEW! Things looking a lot better for next year now! I believe recruiting is done for this next year and any news will be on future HS seniors.

5/3/00 - DeShawn Stevenson has announce he will make the jump straight to the NBA despite his parents objections.

5/2/00 - KU has another commitment but may be on the verge of losing one. Bryant Nash, SF from Carrolton, TX committed during his trip to KU last weekend. An inside player most of his career, he will move to the perimeter in college. His coach compares his athletic ability to Desmond Mason but notes he has a lot of work to do in the transition. DeShawn Stevenson is awaiting his test scores but is starting to make overtures about the NBA. It sounds like he wants to go pro but his mom wants him in college. Who can foresee this one?

4/19/00 - A new name has shown up on the screen and apparently KU truly is interested. This new name is also "Bryant" but it is Bryant Nash in stead of the more familiar Travon Bryant whom KU has apparently cooled on.

4/15/00 - Now that it appears that Travon won't sign and Marlon is transfering, the team that was almost overloaded will be undermanned next year. If Luke Axtell doesn't return and DeShawn doesn't qualify the team will be extremely short. Don't be surprised to see one name show up but no one has an idea who that could be as there isn't any rumors floating around out there.

1/03/00 - Page is cleaned up for senior class and the junior class has been divided by position.

10/20/99 - KU received their first commitment for the year from DeShawn Stevenson. Late Night was very enjoyable for DeShawn and Travon Bryant, the visit went so well, that DeShawn decided to make his decision. He is rated solidly in the Top 5 this year and probably the top wing player. Look for Travon to decide soon and don't be surprised to hear its KU. It may be a two man class but what a class!

9/14/99 - With only three scholarships to offer this year, there has been much discussion concerning the merits of holding on to a scholarship for next year or a quality transfer. By all accounts, KU is really focused on three recruits, despite what any recruiting service might say differently. Coach Williams doesn't see this year as a "must" year for recruiting after last years class which he describes as a foundation group. The three main prospects for this year are: DeShawn Stevenson (SG/PG), Travon Bryant (PF/SF), and Jared Reiner(C/PF). Two if not all three will probably wait until the spring to sign. If all three pass on KU, the players currently on roster are about as talented a group as KU has had in recent decades and the coaches only main challenge would be having enough bodies for practices.

7/15/999-The USA Basketball has a great web page with bios on all the players for the Junior World team and the World University team. Some recruits and college freshmen are listed with KU and Big 12 ties.

To get a better picture about how recruiting works, John's Unoffical KU Basketball Home page has a link to a FAQ page on recruiting. Lots of other links back at GrayHawker's KU Sports Page.

I don't promise anything about these reports! Due to the fluidity of recruiting, you can count on changes. Remember - most of this information comes from newspapers (KCStar and LJW), talk forums, emails, news services (ESPN, TSN) and recruiting services like PrepStars and Insider's Report. So enjoy but don't take any of this as factual or substantiated even if linked with a newspaper article! I do this for entertainment value only - for myself first and then for those that are looking for something to pass the time until the real stuff starts! Oh, yeah, KUAC doesn't endore this site nor support this site - to say the least!

4/19/00 - A new name which showed up in the LJW. Texas Hoops has him rated the number 30 senior player in state. He has played predominately inside this year but is extremely athletic. His coach compares him with Desmond Mason noting he has some range on his shot but is a tremendous rebounder. He averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks a game for 25-8 Turner High. Bryant is already qualified.
5/2/00 - Very athletic wing player has played back to the basket most of his career. Needs to work on his ball handling and pulling up for jumpers according to his coach. Had one-third of his team's rebounds this year. His coach compares his athleticism with Desmond Mason from OSU.

5/8/98 - He averaged 17.5 ppg, 5.3 apg., 5.8 rpg. & 4.5 dpg.(dunks) A very athletically gifted player, he maintains a 3.23 GPA. He played on a loaded team as the underclassman. KU assistants like his game and he should be rated among the top seniors in the country next year.
3/6/99 - Many consider him a favorite to be the No. 1 player in next year's recruiting class.
3/23/99 - DeShawn's team won the Cali state title over 1999 KU recruit Drew Gooden. Roy Williams was in attendence probably as much to see DeShawn as Drew. He will be a prize where ever he goes.
7/15/99 - DeShawn reportedly failed to give up the rock much at his shoe camp despite not shooting well. Has academic concerns to over come. Many feel he will turn pro.
7/19/99 - Drew Gooden isn't one of the people that feels that DeShawn will turn pro. In an interview with Bob Gibbons, Drew said he believed DeShawn wants to attend KU. WHOOOOPEE!! DeShawn had a great tourney at the Las Vegas Big-Time last week. The reports on his academics might be slightly overblown. One bbs rumor stated that despite the 14 he scored, he is a good student with a 3.2 gpa who just needed to prepare a little better before his retake. Drew was in Vegas ref-ing to earn a little spending money and take a break from playing. Tracy Pierson with PACWest Hoops thinks DeShawn is not the best SG on the west coast - but the best PG!! His picture at the free throw line reminded me somewhat of JoJo White.
7/23/99 - A LJW article confirmed Drew Gooden's comments and also that DeShawn will visit campus.
8/24 - KU is set to make an in-home visit.
9/14/99 - DeShawn is headed for Lawrence for Late Night according to the LJW along with Travon Bryant. A recent LJW article reports that DeShawn fully intends to attend college. He has the core grades and was within two points of qualifying on the entrance test.
9/15 - The Fresno Bee is reporting that DeShawn is leaning there because The Tark has promised him the starting PG spot, 35 minutes a game and lots of shots. That's nice. We heard a lot last year how Fresno was going to do this and that and much of it never materialized. If DeShawn wants a chance at success AND be part of a program that will seem like a family to him for many, many years then he will give KU a strong consideration. Actually, I wouldn't put much credence in this report.
10/20/99 - As reported above in the news section, DeShawn enjoyed Late Night with his family very much, elected to end recruiting now, and saw what he wanted over the weekend. The top rated wing player has been compared to Vince Carter with his athleticism but has a much better shot. Some compare him to Kobe Bryant as well and think he could be that kind of impact player. This may be only a two man class but what a class, potentially the highest rated class in the country by next spring despite small numbers. His coach said, despite his obvious ability, DeShawn wants to develop more in college before making the leap to the NBA. He may only be a "two and out" player but he will bring a lot of entertainment to Lawrence however long he stays. KU had been recruiting him since the 7th grade.
1/1 - DeShawn indicates his grades are good and is currently waiting on his last ACT try for his score. Nice interview by Gibbon's web site while at the Iolani Prep Classic this past week in Honolulu, HI.
2/14/00 - DeShawn is having a terrific year. Unfortunately the No.5 player in the country will not be invited to the McD all-star game it looks like unless something changes. Word is DeShawn still hasn't achieved a qualifying score on his entrance exam.
2/24/00 - DeShawn will finish his year with a new coach hired over concerns about the teams "boorish behavior on the court". Late for his first practice with his new coach, DeShawn didn't start. Moved to the post due to his size and ability, his coached noted that he should be averaging more than 5 boards a game. He scored 5 points for the game, 20 below his average. Needless to say, DeShawn wasn't happy about the changes.
2/29/00 - DeShawn was selected to the McD squad. He still has not qualified and a lot of rumors and speculation is swirling around about his future and possibly the NBA.
5/3/00 - Unless some unexpected last minute change happens, DeShawn has opted to jump straight to the NBA. Despite the objections of his parents, he will sign the papers this week. His mother believes he probably passed his SAT test. Since it was choosen for a random audit by the testers he won't have the results by May 14th, the deadline to declare for the draft. Highschoolers who declare permanently lose their college elgibility under the current rules. This may be change next year but would not benefit DeShawn. Lots of speculation on who has influenced this decision and what the NBA scouts really see as his prospects but none of the speculation seems to matter to DeShawn who says he is firm on his decision.
5/8/00 - Well, the unexpected happened. DeShawn got word he made a qualifying score so he contacted KU and will attend after all. What a whirlwind few days. It doesn't appear that KU coaches had made a visit in conjunction with this report according to a TCJ article. DeShawn improved his SAT by 400 points from his Sophomore year with the help of a tutor and unlimited testing time due to learning disability. There is no word on his ACT score but that score seems to be a mute issue now with the SAT score.

7/15/99 - Insider's Report has a blurb saying that Jared has visited Nebraska, Florida and Minnesota unofficially. He averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds a year ago. He's a brilliant student, scoring 26 on the ACT. He's emerged as a top prospect at the Tourney of Champions in N.C. and played well in the Big-Time Tournament in Las Vegas scoring 25 points on a variety of low post moves. The big surprise recruit coming out of the summer. Top schools in no order are Kansas, Utah, Florida, Connecticut, Syracuse, Texas, and Iowa. 8/24 - KU is one of 5 schools set to make an in-home visit.
8/25 - The KC Star is reporting that KU has made an offer. In light of past policy of not offering until the prospect makes a campus visit, I find this unlikely. However, KU might have made their intentions clear that they intend to seriously pursue Jared and an offer a strong possiblity, pending the team's impressions of him. Kind of goes against the article describing this fall as "uneventful" and looking to the spring for any possible commitments/signings.

He will attend the Nike Camp in July, Adidas Big Time, Grande Finale, and Greg Swaims Shootout's. Terrance said KU is recruiting him very hard and he receives 3 to 4 letters a week (Texas sends the most, 5 to 6 a week). His team won the last two state titles in Oklahoma. 1/14/99 - Luke lives in the same general area as Drew Gooden playing for one of the top teams in California and is their leading scorer as a junior. Luke is a tremendous player with athleticism and basketball talent - being able to score from the perimeter and the inside. Luke was rated the number two junior small forward in California coming out of the summer by WestCoastHoops. This is what they had to say about Luke in July: "Hyper-athletic player has great hops, quickness, agility, mediocre J, but has really improved handle, defensive skills and intensity over last year and has shown that when he wants to, he can pass too. Needs to work on that J and his shot selection, but if he plays with intensity he is a High D1 prospect already and a real potential star with better skills and fundamentals. " Read this season preview on St. Ignatius by WCH.
5/13/99 - Luke isn't as highly rated on the west coast (#3 SF) going into the summer as he was last fall. They note his tendency to lose focus at time. It will be interesting to see if he recovers his game on the AAU circuit and at the shoe camps. He needs to focus on his jump shot and become more than an interior dunker and fastbreak finisher.
7/8/99 - From Mike Sullivan of Insiders Report - "Luke Whitehead, a talented 6-7, 210-pound forward from St. Ignatius HS in CA, has decided to transfer to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, VA."

4/9/98Big time long range scorer. Needs to develop defensively but what young HS player doesn't. If he continues to develop, he will be a target of most Big 12 area schools. CU has reportedly attended some of his games this year.
Sophomore averages - 27.2 ppg (1st in class 5A), 9.7 rpg (7th), 82.1% on his free throws.
1/23/99 - He has grown 3 inches and put on 20+ pounds since last year. As of 20 Jan his team is 9-3. He is averaging 28.4 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2 assists & 1.8 steals per game. Word is that he has been on a strenuous weight program which has greatly improved his physical performance against some of the stronger players who frustrated him last year. No new word on who is actively recruiting him. [Provided by Steve Imming.]

1/21/99 - Reportedly Roy Williams has been seen in Iowa City watching Glen play causing much concern among the locals that their dear Iowa Hawkeyes are going to lose another to Kansas. There had been reports as far back as last fall that KU was evaluating Glen. Glen also played on the USA World Youth Team with fellow Iowan Kirk Hinrich and was the team leader in blocked shots despite not starting.
1/25/99 - Was on campus for unofficial visit at the MU game with Iowan 1999 signees Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich.
2/2/99 - There was a report on Midwest Recruiting that Glen might have made an unofficial commitment to KU. I don't put a lot of credibility on this report but it is a nice rumor.
2/3/99 - Pretty sure Glen has not verballed to KU. Not that KU wouldn't probably be happy to hear it.

5/4/98 - A superior player at any class level who will get coaches at Duke, Kansas, UCLA and other schools very excited soon enough. Co-MVP at Nike Top 100 Camp in April. While he is a fluid player who is a great PG, he is bound to get bigger before college.
8/12/98 - Luke is being called the top PG on west coast for juniors and will be a hot recruit for next year. Some consider him the top PG in all of the 2000 class.
7/15/99 - Not listing KU amoung his schools any longer. Gonzaga may be the favorite right now.

4/9/98-Reports indicate that KU has already visited one of Jonathan's practices. Class 1A POY in Colorado, finalist for All Class POY. Very tall for a PG but handles the ball and sees the open court real well.
Sophomore averages - 23.3 ppg (3rd in class 1A), 13.1 rpg (3rd), 7.6 apg (2nd), 4.0 blks (4th), 3.5 steals (10th).
1/23/99 - Jonathan has grown an inch and put on some weight since last spring. Add two more powerhouses to those interested. His season stats throught 1/20 are: 22.0 points, 10 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.8 steals & 2.3 blocks per game and shooting 75.8% from the free throw line. He is playing all positions on the floor for his 11-2 team. [Provided by Steve Imming.]
