2000-01 Kansas Basketball Recruiting

Updated 5/8/01
News and Info
2000-01 Recruits 2000-01 Former Targets

For the recruiting class of 1999-2000 use this link.

5/9/01 - It appears that this years class is complete as the remaining two names that KU appeared to have any interest in are headed else where. There have not been a lot of names surfacing for next year but then KU really keeps it close to the chest on prospects. The summer camps will reveal a host of names to follow going into the fall with.

4/18/01 - Emeka Okafor has eliminated T-Tech while it appears that KU's interest has cooled. Apparently KU coaches have looked at Chris Charles, Seton Hall commitment but unclear whether they are actually serious. Wayne Simien's shoulder surgery went very well and he should be ready for fall.

3/26/01 - Link to a great article on Michael Lee in Northwest All-star game in his bio.

3/14/01 - Aaron Miles was named the McDonald's All-American Player of the Year. Congrats to Aaron!

2/20/01 - Apparently KU isn't done recruiting for this year. Under the 8/5 rule, they can sign 5 this year leaving 3 scholarships for next year. With one promised to Jeff Hawkins, that would leave two next year. So who is KU still interested in for this year's recruiting class? Apparently a PF/C prospect from the Houston area - Emeka Okafor.

11/6/00 - There are no official commitments to post today but it appears all but official that KU will sign four this fall for a top 10 recruiting class. That four will be Wayne Simien, Mike Lee, Aaron Miles, Keith Langford. KU will have one scholarship left to offer this year due to limitations by current NCAA rules. If KU only signs four this year, they will have four to offer next year due to an NCAA limit of eight in a two year period. With John Crider probably transfering, KU will be short two scholarship players next year being limited to eleven total, possibly ten if they don't fill the fifth this year. UPDATE: It's official! Aaron committed in press conference.

10/23/00 - The weekend wasn't kind to Hawk fans. First Chuck Hayes committed to UK then we learn this morning that Josh Childress committed to Stanford. Obviously the window is open for Keith Langford to consider KU. There are few other wings among the top rated but the year is young and kids will emerge over the winter. The remaining major decisions will be Aaron Miles and Jamal Sampson. Miles is still headed to UA on the 28th.

10/20/00 - The list of recruits still available is rapidly decreasing. Obviously, KU has focused in on a definite list at this time. One new name has shown up as being seriously considered by Kansas. Keith Langford, a 6-4 SG from Crowley, Tx, has decommited from Ol' Miss and his mother contacted KU. A tremendous shooter, KU is interested if Josh Childress doesn't commit.

10/15/00 - Late Night was successful this year with visiting recruits. Michael (Mike) Lee committed during his visit. Each player's parents were in attendance and reportedly visited Wayne Simien's family during the visit. It is natural to assume that KU is in great shape recruiting Aaron Miles. Josh Childress and Jamal Sampson both seemed to have a good visit as well. Distance is listed as the main concern for Josh. Sampson has mentioned playing time frequently.

10/2/00 - Well, how things can go from bleak to great over night. As it seemed KU was seeing several of their main recruits head elsewhere, a piece of good news leaps up. Aaron Miles will attend Late Night after all as will his team mate Michael Lee! Along with Jamal Sampson and Josh Childress, this represents the heart of the remaining players KU is recruiting together for the weekend. It is hard to not hope the best but Aaron switching from UA to KU on Late Night feeds those thoughts! Here is an important article on recruits visits but more importantly it confirms that KU can only offer FIVE scholarships with the recent NCAA recruiting changes.

9/22/00 - Well, a few of the top names KU was pursuing have committed else where but the main group of five are still considering KU. Cedric Bozeman and Alan Anderson have committed elsewhere. Jamal Sampson, Josh Childress, Aaron Miles, Chuck Hayes and Dennis Latimore are still slated to visit. Wayne Simien made his visit last weekend and reports from the pickup games were very positive.

9/15/00 - The first official visitors are this weekend - Wayne Simien and Alan Anderson. With six scholarships to award for next year, there has been a slew of names being considered. With recent verbals by David Lee, Daniel Ewing and Erroll Knight, KU has added the teammate of Aaron Miles - Michael Lee to their recruiting lists.

9/7/00 - Some of the visit dates have been set.

8/15/00 - With the summer closing, most prospects are sorting out their favorite schools and the same with the schools. All the rumors have been read, some real, some not. The real lists for the kids and schools are beginning to filter out. Some like to get recruiting news all year round but recruiting news doesn't really pick up until the school year starts. So here is my first update since the spring.

4/15/00 - With Marlon London gone, Luke Axtell in question, DeShawn Stevenson yet to qualify, and passing on Travon Bryant, there will be several scholarships to offer next year. Eric and Kenny Gregory will be seniors along with Luke Axtell. As many as six scholarships be offered. Here are names rumored to be high on KU's list from the LJW. Kansans Wayne Simien (6-8, Leavenworth) and Dennis Latimore (6-9, Halstead). California juniors Josh Childress (6-6, Lakewood ), Jamal Sampson (6-10, Santa Ana), Chuck Hayes (6-7, Modesto) and Cedric Bozeman (6-4, Los Angleles), Jason Carter, 6-8 of Las Vegas, Aaron Miles, a 6-0 point guard from Portland, Ore., Eddy Curry, 6-11 from South Holland, Ill., Rick Rickert, 6-10, Duluth, Minn., and David Lee, 6-8, St. Louis, Mo.

2/29/00 - KU will have 4, possibly 5, scholarships to offer next year. This will be what Roy Williams calls a "foundation" class with prospects at most positions. There are several quality prospects interested in KU. One of the best is right in state, power forward Dennis Latimore. There are three prospects in Cali that are talking about going as a package and KU is interested in all three, Cedric Bozeman, Josh Childress, Jamal Sampson - a PG, SG & C.

The USA Basketball has a great web page with bios on all the players for the Junior World team and the World University team. Some recruits and college freshmen could have KU and Big 12 ties.

To get a better picture about how recruiting works, John's Unoffical KU Basketball Home page has a link to a FAQ page on recruiting. Lots of other links back at GrayHawker's KU Sports Page.

I don't promise anything about these reports! Due to the fluidity of recruiting, you can count on changes. Remember - most of this information comes from newspapers (KCStar and LJW), talk forums, emails, news services (ESPN, TSN) and recruiting services like PrepStars and Insider's Report. So enjoy but don't take any of this as factual or substantiated even if linked with a newspaper article! I do this for entertainment value only - for myself first and then for those that are looking for something to pass the time until the real stuff starts! Oh, yeah, KUAC doesn't endore this site nor support this site - to say the least!

4/27/98 - Obviously everyone will be watching this kid as he may grow to as much as 7-4 or 7-6 by his senior year. His name is already showing up on Midwest Hoops as among the underclassmen to watch. Daniel is a marginal talent at this time. He played for his HS junior varsity averaging 7 ppg and 6 rpg. It is the potential of a 7-4 center that will have coaches watching his progress.
3/6/99 - Daniel is getting a lot of attention from most of the area schools as the sophomore is still expected to grow some. He still has a long way to go but you "can't coach height"!
6/21/99 - Daniel is getting a lot of attention in the internet world. He is reportedly almost 7'-6" now and over 300 pounds. He probably will be a project for several years but he apparently is not afraid to work hard and give it a try. See this article for an insight to what his life is like towering above everyone else in the world from the Topeka Capital-Journal.

When asked which school he preferred, he said, "Cincinnati." He then said he also liked Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA and San Francisco. Johnson, who averaged 16 points and 8 boards a game thi season, said he has a 2.7 GPA and hasn't taken the SAT yet.
10/20/00 - DeMarshay has a new list of schools which doesn't include KU. They are: Arizona State, Louisville, USC, Utah, Alabama, Kentucky, Rhode Island, San Francisco, UTEP

Signed Kansas Over:
11/16/98 - This young man has visited the recent KU games sitting behind the bench. I don't have his name as yet. Will Neil Dougherty's status as a Leavenworth alumus help any?!
11/23/98 - A Leavenworth resident reports that Wayne is a sophomore this year and will be a quality player before his HS career is over.
12/9/98 - Wayne is a quality student who should have no problem qualifying. He has played AAU with the 76ers from KC for about 5 years now and has attended several KU basketball camps. Fully recovered from a knee injury last year, he is becoming a force at the HS level.
1/30/99 - Wayne has visited several KU games this year including the ESPN big Monday game with MU. For the year, he has been shooting 62.1 percent from the field and averages 12.5 ppg on a loaded team. His coach (Larry Hogan) says, "He could be a Paul Pierce. He can run, shoot, jump, and he'll shoot the three if you don't guard him. He has the potential." Sore knees has kept Wayne from playing in every game this year but Leavenworth has enough depth to plug in others and keep cranking out wins. Sophomore team mate Nick Sanders is the second of three players to stand 6'7" along with senior Raymond Briggs who is the teams leading scorer averaging 15.5 ppg.
2/1/99 - Wayne is reportedly a big KU fan and at this point would love to play for KU. His 6'7" athletic sophomore teammate, Nick Sanders, may be having to decide between basketball and football (or play both) after leading the Leavenworth HS football team at quarterback.
2/24/00 - Recently attended a KU game with other Kansas HS players.
4/21/00 - From the LJW - "Simien, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward who averaged 16.9 points and 9.7 rebounds last season for the Class 6A state champion Pioneers, has verbally committed to Kansas, ending the recruiting process before it really started." His coach believes he will grow to 240 pounds in a year entering KU. Wayne could be a force alongside Drew, Nick, Jeff, and possibly Dennis.
8/15/00 - Wayne has taken the summer circuit by storm and has shot up the recruiting lists. His strong inside game, solid fundamentals and hard work have been noticed by all that watched him.
9/7/00 - Wayne is visiting KU on September 16th.
9/22/00 - Reports from Wayne's visit were encouraging. Those that watched the pickup games described him as a "warrior" and another Richard Scott "only 4 inches taller". Solid fundamental player who could make a solid contribution as a freshman.
2/20/01 - Wayne has had a shoulder injury and missed the last couple of weeks but the news now is he won't require shoulder surgery. He may actually return for sub-state to defend their 6A title from last year. A McDonald's AA, he is among the 100 finalist for the annual game. Wayne will also play in the Capitol Classic (roster) on April 7th in Washington D.C.
3/5/01 - Wayne has been selected to play in this years McDonald's all-star game. He should recover with sufficient rest to play.
3/29/01 - Those that were looking forward to seeing Wayne in the McDonald's game were disappointed due a recurring shoulder injury. Reports are that Wayne was looking very strong in practices but dislocated the shoulder after blocking a shot against the backboard and hitting bodies with teammate Curry. Wayne will probably have surgery very soon. Recent years have seen inprovements in the success of such surgerys. One technique involves using heat to shrink the stretched ligaments rather than cut and sew. On the good news side, Wayne was selected the Kansas Gatorade POY for 2001.
4/18/01 - Wayne's shoulder surgery went very well. He had sutures to correct tears in the ligaments on the front of the shoulder. With his arm in a sling, he will begin rehab in 5 more weeks and be ready to participate in fall pickup games.

10/20/00 - A new name that has showed up. KU had followed Keith in the spring but he commited to Ol' Miss. He has since decommitted. His mother contacted KU and informed them of his availability. KU scouted him in September. Depending on offers KU has on table will determine Keith's future. OU is definitely in the picture with him as well. His concern with Ol' Miss was being able to return home easily. He is the oldest child of a single mother. Known as a tremendous shooter (average 19 ppg), he obviously would be of interest to KU at a wing position.
10/23/00 - It is being reported that Keith will make a visit on November 3rd.
11/6/00 - By all accounts, Keith had a good visit with his mother. He didn't get back until real late due to weather in Texas so there was no actual feedback from Keith. His mother said he liked the crowd's chant for him during the game. Expect to hear today or tomorrow for KU.
2/20/01 - Keith has averaged 25.7 ppg in league play heading into state. He apparently grown a bit also with his mom noting he was slightly taller than Kenny Gregory. Playing with a knee injury all season, he seldom has played an entire game. A McDonald's AA, he is among the 100 finalist for the annual game.
3/5/01 - Keith had a great run in the state tourney. Now that his season is over, he is slated for knee surgery to clean up the damage. He will be playing in some all-star games but it is unknown at this time which ones.
3/29/01 - Keith underwent his knee surgery to clean up the tear in his meniscus. He will be on crutches for a week or two then back on the court in full action. He hopes to play on the South team in the TABC All-Star game in San Antonio on May 4th but either way will be in Lawrence for the first summer session. Keith's season statistics were 25.7 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, and 3.1 steals per game. Keith was also named all-state by the Texas HS coaches association.

9/15/00 - KU has recently entered the recruiting race for Michael. With Erroll Knight and Daniel Ewing committing elsewhere, KU has elected to include Michael in their recruiting plans.
From Rivals: 08/15/2000 Commentary by: Tracy Pierson of Pac-West Hoops - Mike Lee, 6-2 SR SG, Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, had a very good summer, impressing college coaches not only with his hard-nose play and toughness, but his new-found outside touch. "Yeah, I've been working on my shot a lot," Lee said. "It's really paid off, too." Lee is hearing from the likes of Santa Clara, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Nevada and UC Santa Barbara, but doesn't have a favorite. He said he could wait until November to make his decision, but believes the official visits will go a long way in helping him make his decision. "I'll probably know when I take my trips," he said. "If it's a place I can see myself, I'll probably know pretty quickly." Lee is also a pretty decent football player, having played quarterback, linebacker and tight end last year for Jefferson. There has been some talk about him accepting a football scholarship and walking on to the basketball team. "I don't think so," Lee said. "I think I'll just concentrate on basketball in college."
9/18/00 - Apparently Michael's and Aaron's coach has not heard whether KU was interested in having both or not.
10/2/00 - I guess news was slow reaching his coach but KU is definitely interested in Michael. Enough that he is invited for Late Night with Aaron!
10/15/00 - Late Night worked some magic with Mike Lee. He verballed over the weekend. He and his family had a tremendous trip.
3/8/01 - Apparently Michael has grown a little since fall. In a recent article, he was described as being 6'3" now. Jefferson HS has played their first game of state playoffs and won easily. Miachel led all schorers with 20 points. Aaron Miles had 9 points. Michael went up for a reverse dunk in the game stating his surprise at being able to get the ball!
3/26/01 - Michael played in the Northwest All-star game featuring players from Oregon and Washington states. Michael lead the Oregon team to the win with a great performance earning him the game MVP. Here is a link to an article about the game.

11/30 - Attended KU camp for past three summers. Growing with size 16 foot. Started as freshman on varsity in school of 3000. Honor roll student and baseball player. Big KU fan. [Provided by KU fan.]
3/6/99 - Had an average year as he posted about a 6 point average per game. Could still develop. I don't know much about the team, maybe they didn't need him to score but to distribute the ball.
10/20/00 - Matt dowsn't even show up on the general recruiting lists now. It maybe he is focusing on another sport rather than basketball. KU obviously isn't recruiting him.

2/14/00 - From LJW article - "Some say Miles is the guy Williams has targeted for his future point guard slot."
4/26/00 - Exerpts from Tracy Pierson of PacWest Hoops - Aaron is one of the hottest recruits in the junior class on the west coastafter performing well at the Boo Williams tournament in Virginia. Last week, Kansas's head coach Roy Williams and assistant Neil Dougherty took a specific trip to Portland to watch Miles work out with the Legends. It was one of the last days of the contact period, when college coaches can be out, and the Kansas contingent used it to see Miles. Kansas is right at the top of his list, along with Arizona, Oregon State, Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA and USC. Miles has a 3.7 GPA and hasn't take the SAT as of yet.
8/15/00 - Attending Arizona's late night program, he is still a prime target for KU. Quotes on Aaron - "He has emerged from the summer as possibly the top PG in the class. He is all a coach wants to run his team including scoring." He had a tremendous summer sports festival tourney on the way to winning the championship.
10/2/00 - Wow! How things can change. Aaron was slated to attend UofA's midnight practice and now he will attend KU's Late Night! Hard not to get excited over this but the effect of Late Night has had mixed results in the past. Probably more important is Aaron attending with Josh Childress and Jamal Sampson. Maybe even more is the fact his team mate Michael Lee is also attending!
10/15/00 - Aaron had a lot of fun at Late Night weekend. His team mate Mike Lee committed and Aaron has said that is big so far as his own decision. Still plans to visit Arizona but they are actively pursuing other PGs.
10/27/00 - Aaron makes a visit to Arizona this weekend then he decides.
11/6/00 - While there is no official word coming out ahead of Aaron's press conference today, it is highly anticipated that he will commit to KU. UoA received their 5th and final verbal from a PG which effectively removed them from consideration.
11/6/00 - Well, they had the press conference and Aaron will be a Jayhawk!
2/20/01 - A McDonald's AA, Aaron is among the 100 finalist for the annual game.
3/5/01 - Aaron has been selected to play in this years McDonald's all-star game. He will also play in the Derby Classic in Louisville, KY due to having family in the area.
3/14/01 - Excerpts from the McDonald's All-American announcement that Aaron has received the Morgan Wooten Award as the Player of the Year. The award recognizes the "nation's top high school basketball senior who demonstrates outstanding character, exhibits leadership, and embodies the values of being a student-athlete in both his school work and community service". Aaron is the "student body vice president and National Honor Society member, maintains a 3.45 GPA in the Biotech magnet program, and will attend Kansas University in Lawrence, Kan. where he plans to major in Engineering". He finished the year averaging 20.5 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals per game. His team placed third in the state tourney having lost to the eventual state champion in the semi-finals.
3/29/01 - Those hoping to see a lot of Aaron Miles in the McDonald's game were disappointed as the Ft. Worth Dunbar HS coach only played him 11 minutes and his own player 37 (T.J. Ford). Maybe this will provide some motivation for Aaron next year as T.J. is a UTexas signee. On the good news side, Aaron was named the Oregon Gatorade POY for 2001.

Verballed Penn State Over: Kansas and Many Others
1/22/98 - Two year starter. Could grow to 6-10. Likes KU's style. Parents both over 6 foot (dad is 6-7 and mom 6-2).
3/6/99 - Kevin has been a KU follower for some time having attended the past 2 KU basketball summer camps. He has grown to 6-10 with the potential for more. Great kid.
8/9/99 - Story from PACWest about development. Mike Miller wrote about Kevin's AAU - Boise Valley Select in glowing terms. This is what he said in a nutshell about Kevin - "Kevin Fellows, 6-10 JR C Meridian High: Kevin is one of the top JR C prospects in the west. He's strong (230?), mobile, active, with great big hands and good balance. He's developing some nice signature post moves and he likes to bang. I saw him a year ago and he's really developed but you can see he still has lots of improving to do (that's a compliment, not a criticism). Kevin will be a High D 1 recruit next summer."
8/15/00 - Kevin doesn't seem to be on the recruiting monitor, at least not for KU.

4/26/00 - Exerpts by Greg Hicks of PacWest Hoops - Isaiah scored 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in leading Crossroads to a 63-57 victory over Orange Lutheran. Isaiah isn't going to wow anyone with his athleticism or great skills, but is a big, wide-body. Learning how to use that body down low and his footwork is coming along. Dominated inside against the much smaller Orange Lutheran team, but also did pretty much the same thing Travon Bryant.

"He is a a very good athlete -- strong and relentless when it comes to rebounding," Mark Mayamura of recruitingusa.com said. "He really gets after it." Hayes plays for the Oakland Slam and Jam AAU team, which coincidentally is KU frosh Drew Gooden's AAU squad.

3/27/99 - Jamar made a name for himself when he played head to head with Kareem Rush's Pembroke team and won. [Pembroke won the MO State 2A title for third year]. Articles in KC suggested that Jamar might have been the best player in the KC area this year as a sophomore. He transfered to KC from Columbia or Jefferson City, living with friends. More information will be added when available.
9/7/00 - KU is keeping touch with Jamar along with other main prospects. He will make an official visit on October 7th. He played this summer with Jeff Hawkins and Wayne Simien for the KC 76ers AAU team.

Verballed Arizona Over: Kansas, UCLA, Duke, LSU, Most of the Big 10, Florida St., Syracuse, and lots of others
9/12/00 - It sounds like it could be down to Arizona and UCLA with KU's involvement fading. It appears that KU is looking for Sampson and Simien to be their main inside recruits this year.
9/22/00 - KU had their in-home visit with Dennis. Reports from someone claiming to be close to the family said that KU took a different tact than other schools. Most tell him that he can play the SF spot for them but Williams said that no coach would actually play him there as he is a natural power forward (probably at least his first few years in college). As usual, no promises about playing time and such.

2/20/01 - Emeka is averaging 22 ppg and 17 rpg in the Texas large school classification. Greg Swaim is reporting that it looks very likely that Emeka will sign with KU in the spring period. He also reports that KU coaches have seen several games over the winter. A little raw offensively, he is a big time shot blocker and rebounder who intimidates on defense. Very athletic, the 6-9 Nigerian native fills a big part of the lane. Emeka is a McDonald's AA and one of the 100 finalists for the annual game. A commitment by Emeka would fill KU's limit of five scholarships for the year.
3/29/01 - The internet reports are that KU isn't showing a lot of interest in recruiting Emeka any more.
4/18/01 - Emeka has eliminated T-Tech and Bobby Knight. It also appears that KU's interest has fallen off.
