Editors Note:
I
discovered this gem in a post on Dave's Rochchalk.com board on Friday, Oct. 25, 1998,
and thought it so simply and eloquently summed up what it
means to be a Jayhawk basketball fan that it deserved to
be preserved. Donald has graciously allowed me to publish
it here, which I am very pleased to be able to do.

To me being a Jayhawk is about ....
- winning with class. Class on
the court, class off the court.
- It's about respecting other
teams, other players, other coaches, and other
schools while unashamedly loving and rooting for
KU;
- It's about being a national
championship contender every year;
- It's about doing things the
right way even if it's not the popular way;
- It's about not having any
dirty laundry to air, but if dirty laundry does
happen than respecting the dignity of the people
and family involved and not abusing anyone to get
publicity;
- It's about five guys (or 13
guys) playing as one team;
- It's about loving and
supporting Roy and the team after a 2nd round
NCAA loss;
- It's about saying Rock Chalk
to a stranger in the Atlanta airport because of
his Jayhawk tie;
- It's about counting the days
from April to November until the next season
starts;
- It's about being as proud of
our academic All-Americans as of our athletic
All-Americans;
- It's about checking Nothin' But Net and 5 other basketball sites first
thing every morning;
- It's about Allen Fieldhouse,
an arena without peer;
- It's about "Beware of the
Phog";
- It's about Midnight Madness
and Senior Night;
- It's about the Rock Chalk
Chant,
- It's about tears in Wilt
Chamberlains eye's and a KU jacket on his back
even after 40 years;
- It's about almost hating
Mizzou for the way they play but forgiving and
understanding that they love their school too;
- It's about a tradition like no
other;
- It's about flying to Lawrence
from 1500 miles for 1 day just so your son and
daughter can see a game in Allen Fieldhouse;
- It's about the chills you get
when you walk into Allen Fieldhouse;
- It's about knowing winning
isn't everything but telling everyone you know
we're the third winningest team of all-time and
the winningest team in the 90's;
- It's about loving Roy because
of the classy guy he is but being doggone proud
he has the best record in college hoops;
- It's about knowing that
whether you're 18 or 98, far or near, rich or
poor, being a Jayhawk is about as good as it
gets.
