Bill needed to get to and win a 2017 Final Four game in order to tie Roy Williams as the second winningest coach in KANSAS history.
>sigh<

Entering the AY2017-2018 season he will need just 3 more wins to pass Ol' Roy.

KU's first regular season game of the season is scheduled for November 10th, as KU hosts Tennessee State in Allen Field House.
Should KU win its first three games, Bill will pass Roy in AFH on Nov 17. Should there be a hiccup in Chicago against... no, don't even *think* that!...

ANYWAY, for all practical purposes the odds are 100% that he will pass Ol' Roy in AFH.
The most likely pass dates are either on Nov 17 against South Dakota State, or on Nov 21 against Texas Southern.
Here's the schedule (- exhibition games, since they don't count) for the month of November 2017.
Fri, Nov. 10	Tenn. St. @KU Allen Fieldhouse Lawrence, KS	ESPNU / 8 p.m.
Tue, Nov. 14	Kentucky @KU United Center Chicago, IL ESPN / 8:30 p.m.
Fri, Nov. 17	SDSU @KU Allen Fieldhouse Lawrence, KS	Jayhawk TV / 7 p.m.
Tue, Nov. 21	Texas Southern @KU Allen Fieldhouse Lawrence, KS	Jayhawk TV / 7 p.m.
Fri, Nov. 24	Oakland @KU Allen Fieldhouse Lawrence, KS	Jayhawk TV / 7 p.m.
Tue, Nov. 28	Toledo @KU Allen Fieldhouse Lawrence, KS	Jayhawk TV / 7 p.m.

416- 88 BILL SELF (.825)

*The "Pass Year" projection for Bill passing Phog assumes KU averages 30 wins a year from the 2017-18 season on, AND that he will continue to coach for KU beyond his current contract, which ends with the 2021-22 season (see How much longer will Bill Self coach?" by Mait Tait).
31-6 is the average W-L record for Self's KUMBB teams over the last 11 seasons (2006-7 thru 2016-17).

So now the only area where Roy was better in a comparable 15 years as KU head coach was getting to the FF.

Of course, if Bill can get to his 3rd FF and win it all a second time, I’d be willing to overlook that, wouldn’t you?

The W coming at AFH is very, very fitting given Self's incredible record in the Old Barn.
Roy coached in 519 games during 15 seasons at KU.
Bill passed him in 507 games at the beginning of his 15th KU season (oh, to have NCAA Tournament do-overs for 2004 and 2005...)

As previously noted, the only area were Roy clearly did better than Bill while at KU was in getting to the Final Four.
Getting there this year -- especially if Bill could become the only KU coach to win it all twice -- would take away some of that "clearly better" assessment.

I would also point out that Roy's second 15 years were his most productive in terms of the NCAA Tournament. Three titles in five FF appearances in 15 years. Got to give him his due.

And hope that Bill can make that next step up in his (hopefully) second 15 years (would he coach until he is 70?* He and we should be so fortunate!). The recruiting class he has coming in for next year sure looks promising.:woohoo:

*As you all know, as a state employee back in the 1950s Phog applied for and was denied an exception to the mandatory age 70 retirement rule, which is why he never got to coach Wilt. FWIW, Roy is 67 and Boeheim is 73. Got to have a dream...
