players did a good job of getting it in there. At the end of the game, we
had all three of their big guys with four fouls and DJ Harrison had
already fouled out. We're gonna shoot a good percentage when we do
that. If you leave out Boschee's numbers, everything else really looks
good. Jeff (Carey) has to work on his lob play to Kenny. "I was pleased with us defensively, yet they made a bunch of good shots. For a long stretch there in the second half, all their baskets were coming either after we turned it over or on free throws. You gotta congratulate Colorado. They came in here and shot 21-22 from the foul line. If you asked them, they'd probably tell you they lost the Nebraska game by missing free throws, because they were 22-36 in that game. But we kept putting them on the line and they kept making them. That was something we were concerned about. Then we had some guys in foul trouble, and we eventually lost Eric. But I thought Nick and Kenny and Eric were something inside, and Jeff Carey gave us a huge lift, as well. "I thought Eric played pretty well at both ends of the court. The stats say only three blocks, but I thought it was more than that. I know he bothered shots a lot more than that. The inside guys did a nice job. Pelle and Mosley are really tough to box out. The first half, we had them getting 15 of their 32 points after getting offensive rebounds, so we talked at halftime about trying to finish the defense, and you finish the defense by boxing out and getting the rebound. "(When CU cut the lead to four) was during a stretch when we didn't play very intelligently. We had a set play called and throw it out of bounds because they guy isn't even supposed to make the pass. We turned it over, and they go down and lay it up. I think they made two threes in a row to get it to that point. But we came down and made a couple of baskets ourselves, and I think we shared the ball pretty well. Guys had some good passes tonight. Kirk got eight assists, and you like that. "I wanted to try to (hold Nick Collison out with four fouls) until under the 4:00 mark (he came back at 3:45). I was probably going to hold him a little bit longer, but Eric got his fourth foul at that time, so I put Nick in for Eric, and it worked out okay. I would like for Eric to have finished the game, because Eric did some nice things for us. "I'm Jeff (Carey's) biggest fan. I thought (lob to Gregory to beat the first half buzzer) was a heck of an assist. You have to understand, he made a heck of a play. The time before on the missed free throw, he almost got the rebound. He tipped it a couple of times. And that time, you don't expect Jeff Boschee to miss free throws. He missed two in a row. But he missed the free throw, and Jeff Carey was alive enough and alert enough to go after the basketball, chase it down in the corner, he knew the game clock was running down, and he threw up a prayer. It was one of those times that it was answered. (Williams now #2 on all-time wins list, passing Ted Owens and trailing only Phog Allen) "We've had some awfully nice kids that have played their hearts out for the University of Kansas. They've worn the uniform with style and with pride, and the relationship I have with those guys is more important. But on game night, it's more important to win. I'll think about for about five seconds and then let it go, because we've got some more games to play." Email Jack | |
