the way we did in the first half... I'm totally stunned, I'm totally
embarrassed. We didn't touch iron the first five possessions. I think we
turned it over twice and took three shots. We completely lost our poise
in the first half, took bad shots. We shot 14 threes in the first half. I
don't know of many games when we've shot 14 threes in the whole
game. And you might as well say it was more than that because Eric
Chenowith came down and shot a couple right inside the top of the key.
It was just a complete breakdown. We weren't ready to play.
Congratulate Baylor. I mean, they kicked our butts every which way it
can be kicked.
"We got (the deficit) to five at one point and had a turnover on that possession that could have cut it to two or three, then they go down and make a three on the other end. They made some big shots when we did get (the lead) down. We were able to make a heck of a comeback. I'm pleased with how the kids kept trying. But as I said, I'm totally stunned about why we were not ready to play from the get-go. In the locker room before the game, I didn't like what we were doing. I said, 'Fellas, you gotta understand you gotta be ready to play. This is a big, big-time game for them.' The first Big Monday game, and they've done some good things. I was concerned before the game, and we just didn't get it done. "Kirk made some awfully big threes for us. A couple of times when we did get it to five or six or seven, we rushed a couple of shots. But when you spot somebody that kind of margin (25 points at half), you've got to play an almost perfect second half. At the halftime, I tried to challenge the kids that if they beat us by 100 points in the first half, we should be able to beat them by 100 in the second half. We got it close, but didn't get it done. "We wanted to try to pressure and see if we could steal the in- bounds pass (late), and if not, then have an immediate foul. And we were trying to substitute Bryant Nash for Eric Chenowith at the same time, but couldn't find anything that would work for us." |
