That was a ton of fun. Instead of going with the usual 3 friends I went with to the Mizzou, Iowa St, and Kansas St I went with the Phog Phanatics camping group. We rented a van and carpooled up. There were 12 of us total. We met up and left around 2:30 this afternoon and headed for the land of corn. We got there around 5:30 and went to Subway to eat and then headed for the arena. The majority of the way there we were playing the Crimson and Blue CD which is a full CD of the Marching Jayhawks songs. It was great cause everyone in the van claps along and yells out the cheers and chants.
When we got in the arena we found our seats first and then dispersed. Most of us went down to outside the KU mens locker room. We talked to players as they came out and also to coaches. Ben Miller stopped to chat for a while. He asked us how the drive was and if it rained on the way. He also asked us to point out our seats and said that he'll probably hear us during the game. Roy was sitting in a chair just outside the locker room and was going over some papers. It was funny cause when the players would come back in from warming up they would always get lost and miss the turn to the locker room and Roy would be there to smile, laugh, and poke a little fun at them.
At about 7:30 we went back up to our seats. We sang the national anthem and then all put our arms around each other and sang our Alma Mater. Then for the starting lineup you can bet that we carried on with standard Allen Field House tradition. When they announced each players name we would toss our homemade confetti as high as we could into the air. The Nebraska fans in front of us had never seen anything like it and they didn't seem to like the dusting of newspaper. Then as they announced Nebraska's lineup we held up our papers and showed no interest towards their humdrum festivities.
During the game the Cornhusker crowd showed little life. It was so eerie listening to such silence during a basketball game. Several times during the game a phone rang down at one of the press tables next to the court and we could hear it loud and clear all the way up in the rafters. You could hear a pin drop in that place. When we were in the point zone you could clearly hear Kirk yelling point whenever the ball was in front of him. With about 6 minutes left the crowd started to make their way towards the exits and that's when the other Jayhawk fans scattered through the arena started joining in with "Let's go Jayhawks" over and over.
After the game we went down on the court and hung out again with many other Jayhawk faithful as we waited for the players to exit the locker room. They came out one by one signing autographs and talking to their loyal fans. Instead of heading straight towards the bus most just stood around talking with different fans until the last member of the team had come out and was ready to board.
We loaded in our van and played the fight song one more time for celebration. The whole way home through Nebraska there was a heavy "Phog" that we had to fight our way through. It slowed us down quite a bit, but I thought mother nature picked an appropriate time to lay it over the land of Nebraska.
Class doesn't start til 1 tomorrow,
