(continued)
After that he took us to the Coaches' locker room. This room is much smaller than the men's locker room. He said when he came here it was just totally bare. Now it has white carpet just like the mens but minus the Jayhawk. They also have wooden cabinets for their lockers with their name plates on it. As we entered Roy said that if they ever fire him, this place would be bare, because the fridge, couch, and tv were all his. He said he had slept many times on that couch from working late or from working long hours. Above the TV there is a picture of the famous bridge on St. Andrews golf course. He said he has always wanted to play it and decided to give himself a present for his 50th birthday. He is going this summer when the summer recruiting period is over with 8 others from the area including Coach Terry Allen. As far as the showers he said that when he first came here they still had the slime and same shower head from when Phog Allen coached there. He cleaned them up, and they look pretty good now.
After showing us he kind of got a serious look on his face. He started telling us how much he appreciated us camping and all the cheering we do to support the team. He told us that he has been under more criticism this year than his previous 11 combined. He said he's going through a really tough time right now. He talked to us about his statements after the Colorado game and said that it wasn't directed towards us. He said that he should have in no way phrased the comments like he did. He said that the next morning he read the paper and looked at what he said and told his wife that that "just looks so bad." Then the rest of the week he heard them on all the radio shows and said it sounded even worse. Coach said that Chuck Woodling can write all he wants, but in his heart he knows that that crowd just wasn't into the game like they normally were. He meant the message of what he said but said he phrased it very very poorly and he regretted the way he said it.
He then talked about the chart and how they determined the different players of the game for each category.
Then we went upstairs to his office. Going into the office in the hallway there is a big mural of different NC teams. In one corner it is totally blank, which he pointed out that he would like to fill that area out. The hallway is lined with different pictures and SI magazines that have our beloved Jayhawks on the cover. Inside Coach's office he has TONS of pictures. He has pictures of past teams and quite a few of Michael Jordan. One picture is Jordan and Coach Williams and it's autographed. Jordan did it as a surprise for Coach Williams. He also gave Coach a set of every single Michael Jordan card that is out there. Pretty valuable gift. Another is a picture of Jordan in a Kansas Basketball jersey. Jordan borrowed it after doing Williams' basketball camp and the following day wore it at a Nebraska basketball camp. He said he wanted to let all the Cornhusker fans know where he stood. Jordan used to come and help at Williams' basketball camp the first few years he was here. He would also work out with some of the players. Coach said he would lure Michael there by saying they could play golf afterwards and would remind Jordan that he had never beaten Coach at golf. After about two years of Jordan making the annual trip Jordan called Coach and asked him if he wanted him to come again. Coach Williams knew that nobody scheduled a harder day-to-day schedule than Jordan, and so Coach told him to tell everybody he's coming but to take the day off and spend it with his family or on the golf course. Coach pointed out that the only pictures of individual players on the wall are of Jacque, Jerod, and Ryan. He only puts the individuals that were academic all americans on the wall.
His office also has one of the first basketballs used by Naismith, a tv, couch, desk, I-MAC, and like I said, tons of pictures. He took us out on the deck and showed us his grill and said Fridays before KU football games he cooks for the entire football coaching staff. Someone asked about his I-MAC and he said he only uses it to word process and uses it for sorting recruiting information. He said he doesn't use the internet or email and the only mail he checks is what comes in the mailbox.
After that he led us back down. In his office he had pictures of St Andrews, Augusta National, and some other golf course. I think it was a North Carolina one. I asked if he had ever played Augusta National because it was my dad's dream to play there. He said he had played it 3 times before and that this summer he was offered $5000 to speak there but told them instead of paying him he would rather play 36 holes and so they agreed to that.
After that he thanked us and told us to expect him at around 9:00 for doughnuts in the morning.
Hope you liked it. Sorry it was so long but I wanted to write down every detail so people could get more of a sense of what he was like in person.
