The Nickel Tour

Ok, here's a story about Roy Williams absent of all the silly rumors. This happened last week the night before the Texas Tech game. I apologize for not writing it earlier.

First let me tell you that Roy Williams is extremely kind and generous towards the student campers. It's tradition that on game days he always brings in doughnuts for the campers in the morning around 9 am. He talks and thanks all of us that are awake and always asks us if he can have a doughnut himself. He usually comes back an hour later and grabs another one. Now normally they are glazed doughnuts but after we lost two in a row on the road he brought in two huge boxes of assorted doughnuts. A small upgrade, but everybody noticed. You can tell he always feels sorry that his team lost and after back to back defeats he always takes more time to tell us how much he appreciates us and how much the players do.

Now to the Friday night before the Texas Tech game.

By this time we had lost 3 road games in a row. Well while I was camping around 8:00 at night, a team manager brings out a big box and puts it in the middle of all the campers. She announces that everyone can have one of the smaller boxes inside. Well we all look to see what it is, and there are individual KFC boxes. Inside each there were 3 pieces of chicken, sides of mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni and cheese, and 2 biscuits. Now at 8:00 when we have been camping through dinner time you can bet everyone was hungry. Everybody was pleasantly surprised and quickly ate their dinner, compliments of Roy Williams.

Well midway through our dinner Coach Williams came out and said he'll be back in a little while. We didn't know what he meant but we thanked him for the chicken.

At about 9:00 he came up to where my group, Roy's Boys, and Neil's Atomic Fireballs (that's Luke's sisters group) camping groups were. He asked us if we wanted to go on the "Nickel Tour." Of course we didn't know what he meant but we agreed to go on this tour. He announced it to the entire group of campers and everyone gathered around. This night there were only about 16 groups camping. He said that all you needed was a nickel in order to go on the tour. He was joking of course and let everyone follow.

First he took us into the hallway where the big chart of the coaches' picks for defensive grade and player of the games were. He punched in a code on the mens locker room and held the door for us as we entered. As we entered, he said the only rule is you can't step on the Jayhawk in the middle of the room. Well we went in and saw what he meant. The floor is a nice white carpet, and in the center of the room there is a big circle with the Jayhawk mascot in the center. He said that's a rule for everyone who comes in. He said when Wilt Chamberlain came back to KU, nobody told him the rule. Well Wilt entered the room and was heading straight towards the middle. Everyone in the room sort of gasped as they saw him take the step towards it. Well our giant Jayhawk started his stride right before the jayhawk and in one step cleared the emblem on the floor stepping cleanly over it. If you ever get to see this emblem you will understand what GIANT steps he has to take in order to clear this thing. Coach said everyone who knew the rule kind of let out a sigh as he made it over.

I'll try to describe the room besides the floor. There are wooden cabinets for their lockers. Each has their own name plate on it. They all have chairs to sit in, not benches. It's a very classy looking joint. In the corner there is a 27 inch TV. Over it is a regular time clock and then a scoreboard clock that shows the exact running time that the scoreboard clock in the main gym shows. That way they know when to come out and how much time is left. On top of all the cabinets are the players' shoes. They let them air out up there so they don't stink up the inside of their lockers. There is only one picture in the locker room. The picture is of Magic Johnson dribbling and Michael Jordan guarding him. He made everyone go up and look at the intensity of Jordan's eyes as he was guarding Magic. He said that he tells the players that if they can go out and show that much intensity on defense, they would have a hard time losing any games. Their showers were standard. They have a sauna. There is then a door to another locker room that is only used to do press interviews. He said nobody from the press can go in the main room. He said that's for the players to think and have some privacy.

Also as far as what happens during half time he says they go in their locker room, and the coaches go to their own locker rooms, and he lets the players have the first 5 mins of half time all to themselves. Then after that is up the coaches come in and make any matchup changes and address anything that needs to be addressed and write up any play changes. Before the games he just writes the matchups and then writes three keys to the game for them to focus on.
